Captain White’s will be moving to National Harbor. With commercial property rents increasing in DC especially along the waterfront, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jessie’s ends up moving to PG as well.
While I’m glad we’re finally getting a fish market out here in southern PG, it’s still pretty crazy and bittersweet with what’s happening to the old Wharf because I grew up going to the place with my Grandma (RIP) and mom during the summer to get bushels of crabs in those wooden buckets or a bag of mussels….And then during the winter, we would head down there to get some rockfish from the fishmongers who would de-gut and clean your fish out of their trucks.
The distinct sound of seagulls, the ever-present scent of smelly seafood on ice, crabs that managed to escape and fall into the water underneath the docks and boats, the smell of seafood boils and piles of Old Bay-drenched crabs on newspaper with beer bottles next to them on bench tables, musicians and buskers playing music around the fish markets, better parking next to the Wharf, patrons and Wharf workers and fishmongers of all backgrounds creating a lively scene….I’m truly gonna miss this essence of the old working class and blue collar DC that I grew up seeing. The Wharf represented that than almost any other DC cultural institution
