You make an excellent point. Figo, Zidane, Kaka and other winners didn’t have “impressive” stats but anyone who watched them play in their prime, would tell you their stats didn’t do them justice.

You could be recognized for your flair, skill, authority in a game without an assist or goal to show for it. Back then, defenders would win POTY (Cannavaro was the last one to I believe), because people weren’t as obsessed with stats.

While I don’t blame Ronaldo or Messi, their rivalry coupled with Tiki Taka football definitely impacted the game more negatively than positively.

I could see the tides were turning in 2010 when neither Iniesta or Sneijder won POTY in favor of Messi. How Sway???

Cesc was talking about that on Rio's podcast. Stats are cool but are you going forward, attacking, or just passing backwards or sideways? You can complete 100 passes like Jorginho and not advance play an inch. Or not have the crisp stats but be a threat like Partey who always looks to attack and advance.

I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if Kloppo takes over for WC qualifying next year after Nations League for one last go before he bows out and would be happy for him I can’t see him coming back to club management ever

Zirkzee is gonna do well. He is a replacement for missing out on gakpo. Someone to better connect up the attack.

Ugarte is a limited player. He reminds me of Minamino at pool. I don't think his recovery pace/sense is that good.

We want to play a high line and so need speed. We are rumoured to be looking at (fast) Ferdi Kadıoğlu which is great.

De Ligt is almost like a slightly bigger, slightly worse passing martinez.

I'd prefer Yoro and a branthwaite type (tall, strong, fast-ish) with better feet (e.g. botman).

De Light has all the personality advantages but we have that with martinez already.

He’s a great team player, yes, but clinical ability is lacking. If we move to a goals by committee model we’ll be fine.

Ugarte is a limited player. He reminds me of Minamino at pool. I don't think his recovery pace/sense is that good.

I think Ugarte will be mint for us. We badly need tenacity and bite in the middle of the park.

De ligt is an upgrade on Lindelof and Harry so that’s fine.

Yoro wants to go to Los Negros, I mean Los Blancos so there’s that. I’d have preferred him, too.
