I'm more so talking about the African dual nationals. So it'll primarily be France, UK and Belgium.
With African FA's the youth level's have been used to develop local talent, that's where many of the current homegrown players get a chance to shine and get a big move overseas (Osimhen for example). The senior team is usually a mix of homegrown players and trying to convert periphery players to come play for their fatherland. Dourcoure for example, he'd been in the youth French setup since U17 but never got called up to play for the senior French national team. Just recently he switched his allegiance to Mali as a WC was close by. Paul Pogba plays for France but his two other brother play for Guniea (not good enough for Les Blues).
If African teams were making deep runs I think you'd see more players opt to play for the African teams.
Yes there's some fukkery with the African FAs, but if a country like Nigeria, Ghana were winning WCs you'd be damn sure brehs like Nketiah, Saka, etc would think twice about donning the 3 lions kit.
It still doesn't stop a country like Nigeria from identifying the young Euro born talent in the academies from early. Nigerian names are very distinctive. None should be going under the radar if we keeping it reality especially in the internet age. We could go thru the English academies right now and find at least 7-10 dual nationality players who could play for Nigeria.
You build the relationship early and stay in regular contact they will come. If youre coming in last min 2-3 years down the line when those players have built up friendships and relationships with other nations players then it's 60/40 whether they take up the opportunity. Humans have egos no matter how they need to be wined and dined made to feel special etc...
Athletes always are going to do to whoever is giving them the best opportunity for them to hit their particular goals. Like Darcoure changing to Mali so he has a chance of making a world Cup. Or when the 5th 6th ranked Jamaican sprinters went to represent the Gulf nations so they could compete in the Olympics because they knew they weren't going to when Bolt Powell Blake were about for Jamaica.
