Kendrick shoukd have won a few years ago so this year is just justice.
You could make that argument for a whole era of artists. I do like that I have gotten every prediction right.
Here's a hint about who wins AOTY: (a) if you are performing and (b) if the other category you're nominated for and win is not televised. If rap album of the year is televised then expect that a non-rapper won. If it's not, then whoever wins that category is probably your winner.
Caveat: the exception to this was 2013 when Macklemore won and rapper album of the year was not at the ceremony, but it was not neessary because he won Best New Artist anyway.

It was ALWAYS gonna be a reach that he’d beat out K.Dot, Hov, or Bruno Mars for AOTY. Awaken My Love is an incredible album but it didn’t garner the level of acclaim or sales to justify it beating those three. He didn’t release any videos and didn’t push any singles after Redbone.
He still has a legit chance to take home Record Of The Year because Redbone was a MONSTER hit for him.
