- The quarterback job appears to still be John O'Korn's to lose, but a second straight year of the same coaching and same scheme have allowed both Wilton Speight and Shane Morris to take significant steps forward this spring. Morris especially is someone we've talked a lot about who has had different coaches and schemes literally every year since he committed. The strong competition at QB bodes well for whoever wins the job, which as we said, we still expect to be O'Korn.

- Michigan is excited about Brandon Peters. Jim Harbaugh could barely hold it in when talking to reporters, and the reviews so far have been rave. A lot of the talk about Peters in high school was that his release was a half second slow and that sometimes he was almost too calm when in the pocket. That's a beyond easy to correct thing, and the fact that poise and calm is the thing he already possesses has the staff pumped up about what Peters can do. It probably won't be this year unless he continues to develop quickly, but he's a real threat to win the job next year.

- Both De'Veon Smith and the offensive line picked up where they left off in the Citrus Bowl against Florida. Patrick Kugler has been pushing Mason Cole at center, so if Grant Newsome isn't quite there yet at left tackle, the Wolverines should be able to survive. The biggest thing that's held Kugler back is a shoulder injury he suffered early in his career that's kept him from building a lot of strength. Ben Braden has really improved as well at left guard. He started to come on as last year ended, and it appears to be continuing. Again, a veteran group that's getting a second straight season working with the same coaching staff in the same scheme. Recall Tim Drevno talking about it being more about "tweaking" than technique at this point, and that's where you will start to see progress.

- While Tyrone Wheatley Jr. took a lot of the first-team reps at tight end at the IMG Academy, we're told that Butt/Bunting still is the most likely first-team combo when the season starts. However, Wheatley Jr. is a natural, much like his dad, so the future for him is really exciting according to those we've talked to. We've still been told not to count out Sean McKeon as a first-year contributor, but he will have to continue to build more weight.

- With Jehu Chesson out, Amara Darboh has gotten a taste of the #1 receiver spot, and he's having an excellent spring according to literally every person we've asked. In fact, the wide receiver group overall has been maybe the most impressive group, as Moe Ways, Grant Perry and Drake Harris are all having strong practices. Perry talked about the battle for the #3 wide receiver spot being wide open, and it may get to the point where it's not about having three set guys on the field, but it's more about maybe having enough depth to use different combinations in different scenarios. With Chesson/Darboh already penciled in, you're looking at a wide variety of talent after that, especially when you consider the group that will enroll this summer (McDoom, Johnson, Crawford, Hawkins, etc.). Ahmir Mitchell is already there physically, and that's half the battle. It will be about learning the offense and fine-tuning the small things before he can make an immediate impact. However, the staff is excited about his potential, and offense is where Mitchell may now end up.

Defense

- Michigan has a lot of pieces to use this year to get to the passer. Don Brown is all about explosiveness and speed, and the way they're building their defense is giving them a lot of options as far as getting to the quarterback and creating chaos. The Jabrill Peppers/SAM stuff fits this bill, and so does the move of Chase Winovich to a rush-end type guy as well. Winovich's game has always revolved around playing fast and he brings a unique dynamic to the edge. With Michigan being so loaded up front on the defensive line, a guy like Winovich or Lawrence Marshall may be able to make an impact in one-on-one situations.

- Michigan is quietly excited and optimistic about Mike McCray. With him, it will be about health as it always has been. Chris Partridge alluded to as much when he met with reporters a couple weeks ago, but it's always been there with him as far as athleticism and talent. It's just about staying healthy on the field. With Jabrill Peppers working with linebackers and Ben Gedeon being their most experienced returning player at the position, Michigan's linebacking corps could more than surprise some people this season.

- Last season, we talked a lot about Dymonte Thomas being incredibly valuable to Michigan down the stretch because it allowed DJ Durkin and his defensive staff to use Peppers in flexible situations. The player that may be in that role this year is Noah Furbush, who we've been told multiple times Jim Harbaugh loves as a player. Furbush has been the other guy at SAM with Peppers. If he comes along far enough, it will allow Don Brown to utilize Jabrill in a bunch of different ways, which is why Peppers is so valuable and so dangerous. The reviews on Furbush so far have been positive. Again, like McCray, injuries are what prevented Furbush from making an earlier impact, but he became a difference maker on special teams late last season.

- Michigan's defensive backs will obviously be another strength this year. We don't really need to write anything on Jourdan Lewis; in fact, I don't even ask about him anymore. Channing Stribling has become more consistent this spring, and the ceiling with him has always been high. He's come in with a chip on his shoulder this year. With those two and Jeremy Clark, Michigan has a trio of extensively experienced players at the position. Combine that with a Keith Washington type and the two incoming freshmen in David Long and Lavert Hill, and you have a wealth of riches at corner this season.

Mccray being healthy&a contributor would be:ohhh:excited about this season:blessed:
