I did it last month... I left Toronto around 1:15 and got to Montreal around 5:50 there was traffic on the 401 leaving Toronto because of road construction outside of Ajax in 2 placesWho has done the Toronto to Montreal drive, was going to take the train but cheapest fare I saw was like 250 , so eff it might as well drive.

Just drive a bit earlier in the morning to avoid traffic and you'll get there quicker.
Or check the via rail site on Tuesday, they have sales for selected routes on Tuesdays. Maybe you'll get lucky

The Western half of Downtown(between Atwater and St.Laurent) has some good hotels that are within walking distance of everything that matters and it's a more English speaking area than the East.
