First off....I been a fan of rap since 1988, "Mary Mary" was the first rap joint I ever heard, shyt changed my life
But this whole thing where old schoolers hate on all this new rap is straight up corny.
I still listen to Kane, Rakim, G Rap, EPMD and all that 90s rap
But I also like Flocka, Gucci, Jeezy, Drake and a lot of other newer rappers.
Is there anything wrong with that? Naw. It's called progressing with the times.
Rap was a baby in the 80s and 90s, not a lot of options and still discovering itself. Now it's emerged as a global art form and there are countless rappers trying to come up in a genre of music that's no longer just a means of expressing ones self but also a very good means of making money.
And honestly....how are the youngin's supposed to respect our opinions when we say "That Flocka shyt sucks, listen to EPMD for real rap"....they just gonna say "fukk you old man you don't know shyt".....besides, what did the elders say to us regarding Rakim? "That shyt is wack, listen to Donny Hathaway for real music"
Plus....rap has changed, a lot. "Paid in Full" had joints that were like 8 minutes long with 4 minutes of just instrumental, you can't get away with shyt like that today. Plus that production was a lot more simplistic. How a kid who grew up on "I Really Mean It" gonna think the Eric B. is President beat is fire when it's simple as hell to his ears? That shyt was groundbreaking to US, but kids today have a much different perspective on shyt.
I ain't trying to start any shyt, cause I understand the frustration of old school fans feeling like rap has changed, cause it has, so either stay left behind and be in the corner complaining that rap sucks now, or embrace the new generation of hip hop and realize it's never gonna be what it is but there's still a lot of dope shyt out there
