No, I got two Titan Xs to play 1440p, all ultra, at 60fps. With Witcher 3, I was hitting 80-90% usage on both cards. If I had just one Titan X, 1440p, 60fps, all ultra, nvidia gameworks, etc., would not be possible. For most games, well....yeah, it should work, but some of these recent games, I gotta say no (ROTR, The Division, etc.). I bought 2 1080s to replace my 2 Titan Xs for a reason. I want that 30% boost (also, for the VR capabilities and new SLI bride as well, but that's neither here or there). With my 2 1080s I expect to hit 60fps, all ultra on nearly all games at 3440x1440p (which is of course more demanding than regular 1440p).

Now, if you don't mind turning down some settings and using a normal AA, then a 1070 should hit 60fps on almost everything at 1440p. My thing is, I don't like to turn down anything (except AA; I just use MSAA 2X, because at 1440p+ you don't need anymore AA than that)

With that being said, i'm assuming getting the 1080 wouldn't be able to hit that performance threshold either.

Looks like I'll just get the 1070.

Yeah, the 1070 is good. I like to go overkill, no comprises. If you're normal and don't mind turning down a few settings, then one 1070 should be fine

Are we of the opinion that the 1070 can play 1440p without a problem? @Ciggavelli

Depends on the games you play...

Witcher 3...Fallout 4 loaded down with mods...The Division...maxed out...at 60fps...no you will probably need two...

For everything but the most demanding games graphically...probably could get by with one...

Your gtx 980 is overkill for 1080p gaming...getting a 10 series card while gaming at 1080p is a waste of money...

I just hate having to turn down settings to get 60 fps with it on some games. (GTA 5, Assassins Creed, and ROTR come to mind). It irks me when I see the fps drop to 45 fps all of a sudden in certain areas. I can tell when it slows down without looking at the counter sometimes. I just don't want the same issue with these newer games that drop in the next few years.

I've got a 4790K and 16 GB of ram, so i'm not bottlenecked there.

The same thing happens with me in ROTR, GTA V, and Ass Creed, . I think the 4790k might be a bottleneck (though it never shows that on the screen). That's why I'm looking at the new 6 and 8 core X99 shyts

Then I guess the question is are you willing to pay hundreds of dollars to get a FPS boost on a handful of games that might benefit from this card...

it's always gonna be an issue if you hate to turn down settings :yeshrug:

I game at 1080p with a 980ti and sometimes I have to make compromises. I don't have a problem with it, because I like it that dev's include options for people to find the graphics/performance ratio that's right for them

you'll have to wait to see what else AMD got, or the 1070. none of the older cards are worth it IMO
Yep, it's pretty amazing how nvidia basically killed their old cards. I can't remember any other time in which they did that.

Old. Obsolete.

TBH, I would probably sell the 970 while it still has value and make the jump to the 1070 cheap :manny:

Might be able to get by with just paying a $125 premium if you find the right buyer locally.
