Some of the strongest purveyors of old soul music over the last 20 years have been white, DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist come to mind, but then again you have people like T-Ray who go way back as well, that really appreciated a lot of the older soul music with proper drum samples and all that. You just don't see it as much, mainstream things started to change around 2000 or so.
Damu the Fudgemunk, obviously Dilla, and ?uestlove are big proponents of the digging scene for production that I can think of off the top of my head.
