The D (where it's so cold)
exactly, I still buy CD's & I just popped them in my PS3 & ripped them to my HDD. I hope you can still rip them at least. :sadbron:

This is how Sony will win. CDs are sold everyday by the thousands it's just that no music head that prefers CDs over mp3's is using their PS3 or 360 as a dedicated player for their music, they probably have an entertainment system in place for that.

The newest iMacs already dropped them.

Yeah they dropped them. But they are selling new "external" drives. That's all a money grab it has nothing to do with people not needing optical drives anymore. They just want you to buy everything from iTunes

In fact now that I think about it this kinda proves the point courtdog was getting at with this thread. They are removing Cd support to force you to buy music from PSN not because people don't use cd's anymore.

I think what you are referring to are netbooks. The whole point of netbooks is to reduce cost size and weight by not offering thing like optical drives or other inputs. They rely on just USB ports.

So no computers aren't dropping optical drives. There is a type of computer that doesn't need them. But manufacturers are not dropping support for optical drives.

the fact they are being dropped (which you said they werent) and offered as an option is because they are inefficient and impractical in the face of current technology. the same reason every other format has been phased out thru history. saying its a money grab suggests that all these manufacturers teamed up on some co-op from the wire shyt to dikk consumers...its a reach

youve seen rigs without the drives, now you show proof that there are still millions of actual cds selling

If it can read CDs is it possible you can just ript your music from the CD and play it on the PS4. I mean if this was 2005 someone would likely could resort to that option.

You are totaly incorect. Not having an optical drive is what's inneficient and imparactical. Cd's still offer the best sound quality of any media. Most people don't have the Internet speed/bandwidth to download blu-rays. And most computer programs still come on cd-rom. Flash drives are too expensive to warrant passing out a new one with each media purchase.

Removing optical drives has nothing to do with outdated technology. It is an attempt by some manufactures to force you to use their systems in a way that will maximize their profitability.

And as for your proof of cd sales check out soundscan numbers.

Cd's are the best sound quality. Music doesn't have to be compressed to be put on a cd. In compressing music to mp3 form sound quality is lost.

Go to your local computer store. Most programs are sold on cd-rom or blu-ray if they are too large

And soundscan separates the numbers. They give numbers for physical as well as digital sales. The last thing I read was that physical CDs still make up at least half of all music purchases.
