I'm sorry but this thing preaches to the choir. I've seen stats that say 90% of Steam deck buyers were already on Steam.
They aren't bringing in many new customers with these sorts of devices they're selling to existing customers.
If they don't exist to be sold they shouldn't exist. Just put out the Steam OS to be downloaded on PCs and call it good.

This seems more likely to sell to non-casuals who want a second rig in another room on a TV if the price is low.

I think this is a PC gamer already has a strong rig hooked up to a monitor and this is his second one for a bedroom or man cave to play indie titles and less demanding games on. Not a primary PC but a supplemental one.

My argument is if you want a console experience in your living room what you want has already been invented by both Sony and Nintendo. Steam's version is offering you what over either of theirs? Off Xbox titles that aren't exactly lighting the world on fire and can't even sell Xboxes?
All the super casual games are already on PlayStation. All the Sony games are and pretty much every major Xbox release is getting a PlayStation release as well.
A Steam Machine is a small middle of the road spec PC cube that offers a library you aren't invested in because you're a casual who has been likely already gaming on a console. It offers you almost nothing worth you abandoning your console for except not having to pay for online multiplayer at the expense of abandoning your existing library and friends list. There aren't any PC exclusive titles that are going to appeal to these casuals who won't game with a mouse and keyboard. It's literally the same problem Xbox had.
Can't wait to abandon consoles and get a Steam Machine so I can wait till at least 2027or 2028 to play GTA VI while PlayStation gamers play it in 2026. Can't wait till damn near 2028 to play Ghost of Yotei.
