You can't even name why these casuals are going to leave a console for this. The Xbox especially the Series S was already a mid spec box moderate priced platform with mostly 3rd party releases like the Steam Machine will be. The Xbox however for most of this generation had Microsoft exclusives.ALL THE GAMES!
You have it backward. Everything is cross-platform now so you might as well have the ultimate cross-platform machine. Half of the people who play Madden and 2k are PC now. You have less of a reason than ever to have an XBOX or SONY.

The market hasn't been kind to it. Valve isn't making a notable amount of exclusive games. The games casuals will play on this will be the same games they play on consoles by 3rd party developers.
There will definitely be a limited appeal to casuals because PlayStation isn't failing at its role. It's pretty clear that existing PC gamers on Steam will be the primary market.
It's great to make PC gaming more widely accessible but it's accessibility isn't a huge issue to the primary customer of Steam. The real star here is the Steam OS which when it lands on any PC will be more desirable than this specific hardware configuration.
