I'm not questioning PC gaming. I'm questioning mid to lower spec PC gaming that tries to mimic a console.

The only real advantage I see is it's a small cube. They're inventing the wheel when it already exist. If you want a console experience on your living room TV it already exist.

You're giving up the majority of the advantages of PC gaming and taking on the disadvantages of a console. At least when a console comes out it's typically pretty solid power wise. This thing is already coming in mid pack at best and age won't be kind to it.
:russ:The average casual doesn't want to "build" a gaming PC. They just want to plug and play. So again, access to almost every game in existence and you don't have to do anything extra but power it on. Trust me, homie. Folk spend 3-500 on just an emulator console. This is that plus more for the same price.

Valve's goal isn't selling hardware
I'm sorry but this thing preaches to the choir. I've seen stats that say 90% of Steam deck buyers were already on Steam.

They aren't bringing in many new customers with these sorts of devices they're selling to existing customers.

If they don't exist to be sold they shouldn't exist. Just put out the Steam OS to be downloaded on PCs and call it good.

Why does a casual need a PC built like a console when they can just buy a console? What is this offering them as a user PC doesn't already appeal to?

This seems more likely to sell to non-casuals who want a second rig in another room on a TV if the price is low.

:russ:Naw bro. You can't play Sony on Xbox. But you can play Xbox and Sony games on PC.

:russ:PC gives you access that a console can't touch.

So a casual wants to wait upwards of 2 years to play an old Sony port?

Is this supposed to run PS6 games? If it releases in 2026 by 2028 great odds we are looking at a PS6.

I think this is a PC gamer already has a strong rig hooked up to a monitor and this is his second one for a bedroom or man cave to play indie titles and less demanding games on. Not a primary PC but a supplemental one.

what’s their goal
selling games on Steam, and pushing their OS into the living room. they'd probably prefer OEM's make the box, but like the Steam Deck, it will need the Steam branding for the initial push

ultimately they just want people to have more ways to access their Steam Library

:russ:What are you talking about? You're just typing random shyt at this point, so you feel like you "won" the debate.

:russ:People buy emulators by themselves for 3-500. A steam console does that plus more. 99% of games that drop on Sony and Xbox are on Steam. The only games you have to wait for are games like Spiderman (who cares)? Why the fukk would I buy a PS6 for 2 games?

A casual is buying an emulator? The same casual that doesn't want to game on a PC is setting up emulators?

I mean if I'm a casual I can get Xbox games on a PlayStation and Sony games day one on it instead of waiting years. Instead I'm supposed to go out and buy a Steam Machine? There's no way a PlayStation isn't more appealing to a casual especially with the fall of Xbox.

:mjlol:You don't set up console emulators. That's the whole point in buying them.

:mjlol:You don't get all Xbox games on PlayStation just the mainstream ones, and you only miss out on 1-2 games total from Sony. You're not making sense. You're saying it's not worth it to buy a steam console but then stating you'll buy a PlayStation for two whole games. It's more cost effective to spend 500 on a steam console instead of 2000 for a gaming PC, while having access to the exact same library. Not to mention you don't have to "build" or set anything up, you just plug-and-play. It's really that simple.

:mjlol:You just come across like a Sony fan, your arguments have no practicality whatsoever.

My argument is if you want a console experience in your living room what you want has already been invented by both Sony and Nintendo. Steam's version is offering you what over either of theirs? Off Xbox titles that aren't exactly lighting the world on fire and can't even sell Xboxes?

All the super casual games are already on PlayStation. All the Sony games are and pretty much every major Xbox release is getting a PlayStation release as well.

A Steam Machine is a small middle of the road spec PC cube that offers a library you aren't invested in because you're a casual who has been likely already gaming on a console. It offers you almost nothing worth you abandoning your console for except not having to pay for online multiplayer at the expense of abandoning your existing library and friends list. There aren't any PC exclusive titles that are going to appeal to these casuals who won't game with a mouse and keyboard. It's literally the same problem Xbox had.

Can't wait to abandon consoles and get a Steam Machine so I can wait till at least 2027or 2028 to play GTA VI while PlayStation gamers play it in 2026. Can't wait till damn near 2028 to play Ghost of Yotei.

:mjlol:You have it backward. Everything is cross-platform now so you might as well have the ultimate cross-platform machine. Half of the people who play Madden and 2k are PC now. You have less of a reason than ever to have an XBOX or SONY.

:russ:GTA VI isn't Sony exclusive! The fukk are you talking about? And who cares about Ghost of Yotei. Who the fukk buys a console for Ghosts of Yotei?

This is a niche product for a niche demographic. It’s not that deep lol. People who are labeling this a “console destroyer/killer” are being disingenuous. But we’ll see…only the price and time will tell.

Agreed

I think valve is looking to get into the niche hardware side of gaming
