I actually watched this same documentary (and many others) for the exact same reason, a while ago. To see how this could be applied to African countries and the short answer is it can't. The big difference between Korea and the other asian tigers and Africa is that even when they were "poor" they were still well educated. Yes many of them were illiterate but they still had a lot of trade skills and the knowledge base was already there. The biggest detriment to Africa's growth is the lack of skilled labor/education. If you want to apply anything in this video to Africa that's what you'll have to fix first.

Breh, that is a GROSS oversimplification of complex multifaceted issues, not to mention many African countries are wildly different. Zimbabweans were VERY well educated post independence, look how that worked out. There are tons of skilled Africans who can't do anything meaningful with their skills back home.

The biggest (but obviously not only) problem is that Africa has shytty leaders (not even a generalization really). If you read up on the history of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe you'll be so disgusted with the gratuitous mismanagement, incompetence and greed that went on for years. So much self immolation, shortsightedness, inhumanity and wasted potential.

Wonder how much it would cost to import teachers from China

Their country is overpopulated, educated and the chinese get paid in dirt anyways

Good idea actually, China has been investing a lot in Africa. But the problem is EVERYONE takes advantage of China

Obviously I'm oversimplifying things. I can't go into detail on the unique problems every single country has. The shytty leaders is a big problem as well, but it is not the end all all be all. In the very video the OP posted Koreans experienced their biggest growth under a dictator who got power through a military coup.

what country doesnt?

as for Korea, I was just there a cpl days ago. I go there quite often actually, they're cool people, they're a bit more introvert compared to the other yellow races, but they live and let live and mind their own business. I rarely if ever get stares in Korea. They'll engage after you engage. If they do engage they're a lot more respectable and cautious compared to drunken chinese who swanton bomb into your business and break personal space.

As for economy, they lack the resources to steal and have a much smaller denser population than most african countries. Japan and Korea can't be compared to Congo which is damn near the size of the U.S with the population of LA spread out throughout the land with various tribes who have nothing in common. The world bank also puts unbearable interests, heck some african countries are still paying for debts from colonial times and that doesn't even make sense since its the first world nations that owe africa. a bag of rice for a bag of diamonds is not an equal trade. Usually when those western countries commit awful atrocity, they let the country they ass fukked breathe, see Japan after the bombs, Korea after the civil war, south america after the dictators, but they will never let the hand off africa, because of its valuable resources. Thats why its a good thing China is emerging as a competitor so that africans can turn their backs on the west who keep fukking them over.

But like someone stated, this ties back to education. Japanese, although they got bullied into opening their borders, were able to counter manipulate and reverse engineer shyt which pushed the hand of the suppliers. Africans on the other hand barely know wtf is going on.

I know every country has it's problems, I was just referring to how East Asian countries do it differently in terms of all that keeping a good face and avoid being shame thing they got going on. Maybe I'm thinking more of the Japanese but, I see this with Koreans as well.

Over here, we are all about letting it all out while they seem to be more, I don't know, reserved? Talking about their problems...

I'm half-assed asleep and can't articulate myself because of it but, I read a lot of books...

Anyway, good stuff in your post...I like hearing knowledgeable people on a subject...

Subs to watch later

I'm sure there's no magic trick though, it just takes unity

IMO this is a big hindrance to African and middle eastern countries that can't get their shyt together. There's no unity.

I blame European countries for arbitrarily drawing up African country lines and trying to europewNize the African continent

Why?

I can appreciate and respect a culture without wishing to be like them either...

Also, Korea has a lot of internal social, culture problems and if I'm not mistaken, aren't big on publicly displaying those problems to fix out in the open like us Americans...

Saving face, shame culture I think are pretty big over there and causes more problems in return than help...

No it doesn't

By saving face,it allows them to control their image and preserve a positive reputation
Africans do not need to follow their blueprint...

They are doing their own thing and are doing quite fine...

Also, when will people start equating economic power with perfection?

South Korea has a lot of internal problems that need major work and clean up on...

I like East Asia but, I honestly get annoyed at how people (especially us Westerners) constantly romanticize, glorify, and fetishize East Asia as some darn utopia...

I'm just allergic to dikk riding and you're doing a whole lot of it in this thread.

:scusthov:

This shame culture is probably why South Korea is #2 in the list of suicide rates by country.
Several African nations are also in the top 15 of suicide rates by country...

One Africa
everyone has answers about how a continent can learn from one country but noone is arguing african americans to learn from this and grow as a people and stop begging white supremacy for acceptance.

What's the point?

It's no different than a family who are constantly putting on a show of being picture perfect but there is complete out of control chaos going on behind close doors that will erupt and cause an even greater image problem than just being real and upfront in the beginning...

There is no out of control chaos going on in SK

Their societies are clean, civil, educated and well behaved. Their economy is booming

Sure they can sometimes be over the top with their academics but it's better than every 3rd world country.
