Thats the another thing i miss about record stores, were the in store sets by the dj's passing through.

I used to basically live at these 3 shops in DC 97 to about 05, when they all closed.

I always wanted to do a set at the shops. That was one of my goals.

We definitely need that shop culture back. It was the barbershop for dj/underground music world.

It was our meeting place, where all the djs in the city would be chopping it up. Youngins like myself was getting inspired soaking up all whats happening.

Lack of record shops has really put a hurt on the underground music world.

97-05, good times.
No doubt!

My favorite spot was "fat beats" at the original spot on the east side in the basement. I ran into so many people there, and got hard to find records. You could smoke weed in there, and the mix of different types of people was pure hip hop, just without the violence.

Repped. This is the truth.

I met so many producers, Djs, music heads from just chilling at the record shops back in the day. And just spending time in there looking for gems from the dollar bin to the premium cuts. It was nice too cause they would usually have turntables there and a mixer to listen to records before buying so it would be nice to grab a handful of records and weed out the gems from the crap. LOL.

There's Halycon and Turntable Lab here in NYC. Halycon has instores on occasion, they're moving from DUMBO to Greenpoint though.

The whole internet culture behind records now is weird. Besides the digital options, there's this whole vinyl resurgence that's going hand in hand with resale culture. I've been trying to find stuff I had back in teh day, like 90s NYC deep house and stuff and finding those records have doubled in price just because some hyped DJ played it on Boiler Room.

I will admit though, from an electronic music standpoint, it's more active than ever and seems more accessible than ever with the internet and music technology improving and social media and this new EDM scene. Like deep house is pretty much mainstream now..never thought I'd see the day.

I mainly go to A-1 when im in NYC, i always plan to go to the shops in Brooklyn. But i just end up spending the whole day at A-1

Yea I actually did a few DMC comps back in the day 99-01. THats where I first learned about music business politics, and how its all about who you know and shyt.
Was also able to meet alot of great up and coming DJ's as well as hang with some of the vets(Roc Raid, Q-bert,etc)

I will never get rid of my techs, there was a time when I was down to one cuz I was focusing more on production and some scratching. But I copped a pair of tables rather cheap a few years back now I'm rocking three of em.

I tried a controller once....it was the numark NS7. I bought that just because it has actual vinyl platters on it, and you could cut with it and do all that. But realized it just wasn't for me.

Right now I'm using traktor. Definitely a fan of Traktor. I like NI stuff, since I use maschine/komplete for production everything is just seemless between the two.

Bruh, I don't even think I could handle lugging all those milkcrates anymore. That shyt was the worst.

Three coffins(tables and mixer) 4-5 milkcrates of music and everyone always seemed to be "too busy" when It came time for the DJ to setup.

Traktor/Serato is a game changer. Unlimited music.

I was doing a gig and ppl would request a song that I wouldn't have and I would just download it on the spot and have it in the set in a few minutes.

that shyt is crazy.

that was the worse, lugging crates, to different set ups... some were easy pull up and set up... and some were up or down flight of stairs, long hallways, and etc... and people were eager to help you set up... come break down time, when you tired from standing various hours.... all the help magically disappeared... LOL

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
Reloop makes 8 different models of direct drive turntables that are comparable if not better as quality too for a fraction of the price.

The high end ones include features like adapability features for serato or traktor and sequencing buttons. Also reverse features and high end pitch control.
what y'all is missing is, if you're the type to still be spinning records, you're the type to not have moved away from the 1200 in the first place

all 1200 of this are probably sold already... every damn dj i've seen online was on some :ohhh::gladbron::wow: even before the coli posted anything

all the youngings will treat them like retro jordans... and anybody else on the new wave... wasn't rocking a 1200 this year anyway

it's not like they about to put about 2.5 million and mass produce this thing... you'll probably never see one in a store, like you never see one now

Yeah you're right....this is just for the collectors. Just a novelty item. Realistically the game has changed beyond the 1200s but there's obviously still a demand for them.

Native Instruments does make the best stuff. I use Maschine as well...been looking to get into Traktor though...

:patrice: what exactly about it makes it different than Serato though?

LOL, that would mean that the coli would have to acknowledge DJ's as part of hiphop.

Something most of these kids know nothing about,
Seriously.

Most hip-hop Djs pretty much have been phased out the conversation. Still eating....but as far as being an essential element of hip-hop like it used to be? nah...the game advanced too much.

Some hip-hop DJs like ATrak and Craze spin EDM now...some moved onto techno and deep house...others moved to trap...or just do the old school parties.

The idea of the actual mixtape DJ as a hip-hop fixture or DJ in general, is still there...but the MC became the most prominent factor out of the 4 elements of hip-hop.

True, but I think the new pioneers are the new standards. Them shyts are built to dead outside sound, they have multiple pitches(up to +/-50), and they track extremely well. Plus, I like the way it looks, with the blue lighting.

Like you wrote, a lot of "collectors" probably are going to buy it, mostly.

yea I used serato before Traktor. IMO it just comes down to preference. they both worked the same.

I started fukkin with traktor more because it was cheaper. Then I really got in to it and they did more updates and I REALLY got in to it. Especially coppin that Z2.
