The NFL status as the most-watched sports league reached a new level in 2023 as the league accounted for the industry’s top 50 U.S. audiences.

The NFL generated the 56 largest sports audiences of 2023, a first in the 14 years this annual list has been compiled. The milestone can be attributed in part to the fact that there were zero College Football Playoff semifinals in the calendar year. (The 2022 semis took place on December 31, 2022, and the 2023 semis on January 1, 2024.)

As usual, the Super Bowl and conference championship games delivered the year’s top three audiences.

Straight up domination stat. It ain’t even about sports anymore, they cleared general entertainment.

Everyone knows about the domestic fans, but additionally when those immigrants come to America they become NFL fans.
That’s the “When in Rome” effect.

Think of all the Hispanic people you see walking around in 49ers, Raiders, Cowboys, Steelers, etc. gear.
A lot of people straight from India that I work with are heavy into the NFL.
Asian folks all about the 49ers and Giants.
Etc.

Not many other TV programs captures general audiences like that.

The NFL is obviously the most popular league in America and always will be but the fact that their playoffs are single elimination games is huge for viewership too. Way more exciting than 'game 1' of an NBA playoffs game for example.
