This chemical got in the water, it got into the food. It got into the genetic code of the people who lived there. My dad was drafted in to vietnam from bham, alabama in 1969. Majority of his life he couldnt even go to stores by law that was for whites only, but he was to put his life on the line for "freedom" and kill vietnamese who were sicking dogs on his older siblings or spraying hoses on his cousins for wanting the ability to vote.

This life ain't for every body. Some can't handle it. The same people complaining or having issues could of possibly had issues anyway. Also I really dislike how people think PTSD has to be service related. A lot of us from the Hoods already had signs and symptoms of PTSD from friends and family members being shot or being shot at or raped or abused or whatever you may have...So I can't blame the military for these issues...

It also took me 17 years to realize this i would of told you otherwise at 3 years in. And this comes from reflection and time spent in combat, on staff in combat, planning for combat, training for combat, recruiting others, training others, figuring out what training others needed, and now advising.

Sadly some of us are more likely to have a traumatic or bad experiences right in their home town. Some people just aren't physically or mentally tough and some just lack empathy or a social conscious.

Ask yourself have you lost friends, seen a tragedy, been involved in a tragedy, caused the tragedy. Just sit back and reflect.

PTSD was less back in the days because they didn’t give out benefits. They had people who were built for war signing up. Now because sign up for “money for college” or a “way out”

PTSD rates were just as high, if not higher. They weren’t diagnosed as PTSD, it was “shell shock,” the “wartime blues,” and a few others.
Benefits have been there since WW2. Did you actually serve? Because my father and grandfather did, and it fukked them up.

Just had a 40 minute convo with my mom about this topic. We see differently on this and we agree to disagree. She's very defensive of the Armed Forces and thinks that former/current service members like the ones who commented on Twitter, are soft and want to be victims. She doesn't look at herself as a victim and says the military gave her the ability to have the life she wanted to have, the military enabled her to be able to retire at 40. She pointed out that the vast majority of Americans are not only not retired at 40, most of us are still working our asses off at 50+...

I respect those of you who share her viewpoint. There is opportunity costs to any profession, for her, the things she endured that has left her with different ailments and issues was worth it; her words: " if I have to take a couple different pills a day, so what?". It got her where she wanted to go...

He was on a tour in Iraq when his squad got hit with an IED

He actually finished his tour there and he was back in the states one day, standing in his bathroom(he lived on a base in Kentucky back then) when his legs randomly stopped working

His wife(my aunt) was en route to taking him to the hospital on base when he had a MASSIVE stroke on the way

When he got there the doctors said that he had had heavy internal bleeding in his brain since that IED incident

He had another 3-4 massive strokes and 5-6 minor strokes while in the hospital over the following 5 or so years

The army gave his family a large payout but I couldnt give a fukk about that I haven't been able to actually speak to my uncle in over 10 years. He put me on to soooo many fantasy books back when I was a kid and my mom(his sister) would take us out to the base to visit him

He basically communicates with his eyes now and my aunt takes care of him

Couple that with the fact that there was really no logical reason for the US military to be in Iraq in the first place outside of making an example of a country that didnt automatically acquiesce to western bully tactics, and i would say that the western M.I.C. in general has put a sour taste in my mouth

Man I know how you feel. My aunt, who helped raise me was going through the same thing. She held on for years until she finally passed in 2016

My parents are wild patriotic and have gotten some identity back, but definitely were "company people" in their enlistment. And that military structure is 50/50, some kids and people and family need it. Others don't, and it can be really oppressive when you don't know how to shut it off at home...
