raising minimum wage is not the answer, and probably does more harm then good

i was an economics major in undergrad

and if they raise minimum wage, all that will happen is a displacement of jobs as companies turn to automation and robots/ai to handle minimum wage jobs

8 people shouldn’t have as much wealth as 3.5 billion people :stopitslime:

It’s no different than saying 8 people deserve to have more water, air, electricity and food than 3.5 billion people. The reason you see no problem with it is because you and Nap think you gonna make it into that group of 8 one day :mjlol:
Why are you focused on a few billionaires and not the hundreds of thousands of millionaires?

This is intellectually lazy.

Theres a lot of rich people with American dollars. Thats a good thing. There SHOULD be in the American system.

The problem is that you think that if theres more rich people, that it somehow affects minimum wage?

How?

Theres no amount you'd raise MW by to not still leave people...on the bottom.

The problem is a fundamental misunderstanding of MW and you keep ignoring all the people who encounter wage stagnation who are NOT making minimum wage.

OP, alternative proposal: abolish MW, introduce UBI. Set it at an equivalent to say, 30 hours/week MW? Its paid to everyone 18+ unconditionally, tax-free. Not enough for someone to live independently, but enough to at least contribute to a household while they pursue education if they choose. This would naturally restrict the workforce, forcing competition for labor. Occupations in high demand from employers can pay more to get the talent needed.

You just redescribed another minimum wage.

I worry about a UBI because it still doesn't address the WAGE GROWTH issue. And Im wary about its social implications in the United States and getting people to work.

Americans really don't understand how hard the rest of the world works and how easily that leverage from other nations can come from behind and leave them as an entirely consuming unproductive society. Europe is a warning.

I know people will shyt on me for this, but so be it.

Seems to me people have a problem with there being an issue with some people inevitably having less.

We need to clarify if your goal is to spend your way out of the problem or to find solutions to get people better paying jobs.

For sure

And there's gonna be a whole class of uneducated, unskilled people that have no social utility and no ability to work

and that is why UBI is needed. When the unemployment rate is over 70% and automation took over most skilled workers and jobs, you not gonna kill off 250 million people. Best for UBI to come in for the basic expenses, and work a job for more money if its available (and you still get UBI).

Raising minimum wage will not increase the quality of life for those earning it.

The price of everything just goes up. Rent goes up, property value goes up... and nobody is better off.

All it does is punish small business owners and devalue the dollar even more.

UBI is another harebrained scheme cooked up to keep people with instagram accounts happy.

Too much pocket watching.

You will point to certain governments experimenting with it, to which I'll tell you that I don' believe it will change anything.

What good is everyone getting the same amount anymore and expecting prices to stay the same?
