:what: everything I've stated said dude is what he is cuz of his sound, I never said for him to be traditional, what I am saying tho is that his sound is very narrow (it's extremely dark/foggy) to me it's a "trendy" thing cuz its "different" and "new" but we all know how trends go...with so many drake/weeknd copies coming out, it's only a matter of time before people are over it, does he have the resiliency to survive that? That's the only question I'm posing (not to you necessarily, but to the dikkriders on this board who I've seen call him the future or the voice of a generation :russ: )

We can sit here and exchange our opinions on that all day, but it would just be that -- opinions. I personally think Weeknd will be just fine. He can't help if people are imitating his sound. He's on his shyt right now. It's only natural for people to be inspired by him. I think he's aware enough to know when to change shyt up, but for now, why would he? Dude's winning right where he's at. We'll just have to see how things pan out in the long game.

You know you're a weirdo when your fanbase doesn't want you to give interviews. This nikka's fanbase is like ICP's. Only for the abstract. Music and style shouldn't be that complexed.

Wherever nikkas need to be told on
I'll be surprised if he has a better career than Lyfe Jennings.
This guy?

I'd say he's doing better already. Yikes.

Lyfe was huge in the Black community tho. Every nikka I know had his first album. Lyfe had the 45 and under crowd in the ghetto. He has 1 classic album under his belt. The Weeknd appeals to more cacs but if he can ever have the following Lyfe had in the hood then he's done something. Appealing to cacs is easier imo. Just make abstract music and weirdo's will be drawn to it.

Pretty much all black people under 30 listen to the same shyt because there as close minded as you :pachaha: Some of the biggest artists of all time have made 'abstract music', thank god they did or music would've never evolved if artists had your attitude:scusthov:. There's a reason so many young bulls don't want to be called r&b the genre is dead & they know it. Nobody is gonna become a superstar doing 'traditional r&b' in 2013, fucc are you talking about? :dwillhuh:.

Acting like you wanna see the weeknd win when the entire premise of this thread is you hating on him cause he's too foreign(sorry 'abstract') for you. Go bump jagged edge fakkit

Even if he doesn't blow up in the mainstream the Weeknd will be good. He's already got a decent fan base and maybe he's happy with not being all on the radio and on everyone's songs. But i still think he will sell a lot of albums when he drops his first real LP.

Fucc outta here. There's a reason so many young bulls don't want to be called r&b the genre is :flabbynsick:
To you it is. R&B is the backbone of the reason you're on the Coli. You seen the reaction Charlie Wilson got at the BET awards? No abstract artist will ever get a reaction like that 30-40 years after their debut album. R&B is forever this abstract shyt is temporary until the niche fanbase finds an even bigger weirdo.

He was cool when he first started coming out with mixtapes but honestly I think dude is just a fad played off the hype of Drake. Not to mention with the artists of yesteryear getting older & less appealing to younger generations (Usher, Trey Songz, Neyo, etc) it seems like the youth needed new & fresh faces for R&B and that has us here with Miguel, Frank Ocean & The Weeknd but honestly none of these artists will ever be as big any of their predecessors because all in all they're just not that appealing... & I'm a huge Miguel & like a few Frank Ocean songs here & there but these artists aren't really versatile at all. Neither is Weeknd & he'll probably fade hard this next year...

Well we can agree to disagree. I look at The Weeknd like I would Tyler the Creator if he was a nice lyricist. I made this thread because I think the guy has vocals and when I heard "Wicked Games" I thought it was a dope song. After hearing that I searched for more of his music and the vast majority of it was weird. If Tyler The Creator was a dope lyricist nikkas would be saying he should do traditional hip hop instead of that weird shyt he's doing now. Same goes for The Weeknd, he's a dope vocalist as far as studio music goes but it's the weird shyt that will keep him in abstract lane. Tyler The Creator has a following too, but that weird shyt only lasts so long.
