Maradona in 1986 had 5 goals and 5 assists. That much assist means you have people to bury the chances you provide and Maradona had Valdano who did his thing and another one forward too. That said, out of the 7 games, Maradona scored only in 3, which means that Argentina had to relied on other people to score in the other games and they scored a total of 14 goals in that WC. The "Maradona won the WC by himself" is wildly incorrect though it is true that Maradona outshone anybody on that stage by a crazy margin.
Messi last real chance of winning the WC was 2014. Argentina was never in position to win that one. In 2014, Messi carried his team in the group stage and finished with 4 goals but only 1 assist. That last number is low even though he gave several great key passes but it is because Argentina didn't play great but also because Palacio, Higuain and Lavezzi were the forwards and I believe they were all starters above Aguero (Palacio of all people). You start Aguero up front in that WC and I'm convinced Argentina would have won that one.
And Argentina is not a top team simply because they have loads of attacking talent (only indivduals). Their goalie is trash, their defense is trash and their midfield is washed. That Argentina side was one of the weakest in ages and I'm not drawing any conclusion of that France win because we edged that game while the gap between both teams is far bigger than that 4-3 score line.
I believe Tolisso will probably be his replacement as N'Zonzi plays a 6 for the NT. I like N'Zonzi too but Kanté is too good to even think replacing him. I don't know we will have in the QF but if we have a team that expects us to control the game, it will be a boring game.Matiudi out for the next game

Why majority of football/soccer greats and pundits highly rated Messi because of how he play, he is scoring goals while creating goals for his teammates. Cristiano is the better GOAL machine

I think seniority should prevail above all if his senior is Messi so I agree with the decision of having Messi over Dybala (it's no brainer really). Dude should have accepted to play out wide (I'm sure he could play as right winger like Messi was doing in Barça) so he could cut inside. This would have been far better than having Pavon as a starter smh.I think the fact Dybala can't adapt to a new role is the problem here. As a top player he should be able to adapt and hug the wings and cut in from time to time. He seems to just surrender to the fact that he can't play with Messi

People say Messi carried this team to WC because of the WC qualifiers. They lose a lot of points when he didn't play and need the last game to qualify to Russia. In Ecuador where Argetina haven't qon for decades while down by 1. Even the Argetina media that criticized him the most change their tune and say he carried them. But i don't believe that, they need each other for the team to succeed
