how many pure consensus classics are there in the history of hip hop? 4? 5?

a rough estimate?

i'd say about 30-40.

with about 30-40 more that are lightly disputed.

TM 101 is the definition of a classic in THE CULTURE. I can see your point if youre arguing against critical favorites like The Cool and Blus album being classics when they didnt have the cultural impact, but those type of albums do exist

I like jeezy but meh.

tm101 falls under the "get rich or die tryin" category. classic impact, but not classic quality.

and another thing with tm101 is that it wouldn't have had nearly as much impact if it came out in a better era.

one of those albums that get the classic title by default just because it was amongst the best out during a forgettable era.

the idea of LIG being a classic basically drives my point home.

nas himself has at least a handful of better albums than LIG and none of them were tagged as undisputed classics.......with the exception of illmatic of course. yet new forum fans are in a rush to crown LIG? that just doesn't add up.

doesn't matter. Hip hop fans have pissed on the word "classic" much it doesn't even have the same meaning anymore. Classic is just a code word now for "album I really like"

using your criteria though, you'll never find a classic album again because you'll never wanna acknowledge it. You'll never be able to fathom that someone today can make an album as good or better than the stuff you grew up on. It's OK. It happens to everyone. It just means you're getting old.

Even if someone doesn't agree that albums like Life is good TM101 MBDTF TCD GKMC F&L American Gangster R.A.P Music are al classics those and quite a few others have to at least be considered close to classic so I cant agree that it's been no classic albums in over 10 years.

you don't decide if an album is a classic or not.

the culture is what gives the classic status to an album and a lot of them have been in the classic debates. The culture changes, for better or for worse, so let's stop with the "it's not respectful for the history"
