BIIM gets the short end of the stick on this board given people like the more urban r&b or non crossover r&b groups from the 90's more. But this episode did a good job reminding people just who the fukk they were - from their raw talent, to success, to impact on groups (male and female, white and black) to come after. Gotta salute the Philly crew, this ep made me throw some respect back on their name myself :salute:

Boyz II Men, for all their success, is far from the template. They sang better than they danced (which is great) and they were void of any personality which was immensely important in how boy bands were categorized from there on

A feature on New Edition just makes more sense

When I saw this pop up on Netflix I thought they were forcing it

not really, one, BIIM are better singers, and two, if you watch the ep, they look at how easily BIIM was able to run the table on contemporary urban stations, old school/soul, adult comtempoary, and pop (this is a Pop series, NE wasn't a crossover success/Pop) stations out the gate and all at the same time. that was something the white bands tried to emulate - being viable on all 3 formats (not old school soul stations, but general adult contemporary)

I think most would put respect on their name. A lot of people just find the music boring. I also see some of their peers even seeing them in a negative light in regard to them being condescending. Kandi detailed a bad experience when she worked with them.

Jodeci could never :lolbron:

sike naw, they’re both great in their own right…

their chat on Questloves podcast made a lot of sense too.
Once End of the Road blew up, Motown wanted more and more ballads from them. That’s why they moved away from the mix they had on their first album and they did less and less song writing and control of their sound.

I’ve met some of them personally, and they not some choir boys their image made it seem they are. Other than Shawn, they all from the projects.

Boyz 2 Men being better singers is a worthless point since the discussion is impact/influence . The idea that Cool It Now & Candy Girl weren’t pop hits....lol

There’s people who believe Madonna can’t sing but are we going to argue her influence & impact?

The fact that it’s a pop series makes it worse. All the boy bands were strategically assembled (including NKOTB which preceded Boyz 2 Men) to appeal all sorts of young women

It just so happened that New Edition was actually that way by nature

Boyz II Men is part of a lineage. They sold a lot of records and did their thing in their day but NOBODY is out here saying these guys are The Architects of long lasting tropes

they weren't anywhere near where BIIM was in regards to peak positions and time spent on the charts

and a group/artist/athlete can be part of the lineage yet still set a new standard - BIIM and Jodeci did that for groups in the 90's.

if we're just gonna credit the first groups with everything to ever happen after, then let's just talk about the jackson 5 forever :rudy:

dallas austin wasn't fukking with them either after they blew up
shyt I wish I remember who the interview was but they basically blamed B2M fall off on them getting the big head. Said they wanted to start doing more writing and producing of their own songs and started rejecting songs from the big hit makers. They said the way B2M was rude as fukk and made people turn away from wanting to work with them.

Boyz II Men were immensely talented and made great music. My only problem is that they came across so uncool lol. In all of they’re music they were taking Ls and begging. Every one of their big records (End of the Road, I’ll Make Love To You, Down on Bended Knee, Water Runs Dry, etc.) had them in a vulnerable position/getting chumped.

“Baby don’t leave me :mjcry:

“Please let me make love to you:mjcry:

The deep voice dude even said on the one joint “I know you were out cheating on me but I just didn’t care.” …:what:

It’s like they was okay with being suckers ALL THE TIME. New Edition, Jodeci, Dru Hill, Jagged Edge, etc…at least balanced the sappy stuff with playa songs.
