Producers are like directors in movies. Just like a director doesn't need to know how to edit or operate a camera, a producer doesn't need to know how to play an Instrument or mix. Their job is to have a vision of what the finished product is supposed to look/sound like and then get the people who know how to operate the technical equipment to translate that vision into images/sound.

Rick is a guy who came up in the most profitable era of music where someone like himself with no observable talent could make money in the production of music. Budgets aren't big enough today for his type of expertise to get paid

Plenty of ppl out there who can play all sorts of instruments but don't mean they can write hit songs or know what ppl like. Just because you can play guitar and drums don't make you prince.

Exactly

Knowing what people like and getting consistent results is a talent or “gift” in itself.

A lot of people THINK they have good tastes or know what people like but really don’t :manny:

Rick really tapped in and knows when shyt a vibe or not

What he means is "I have the ability to explain to white men,why this black music will appeal to white youth. So that they will put money behind it and make it so"

Nothing more and nothing less really. Truthfully Ive spotted more talent before they blew up than Rick Rubin. If only I was in the right circles and knew white people music back in the day. All you gotta say is shyt like "I'm telling you Mark, T.I and this trap music thing? It reminds me of retro Sound Garden ,fortified with the rawness of black pain and an urban twist:skip:"

Mark-"omg,I can totally see it:picard:! Heres 2 million dollars."

In other words hes a bum and a grifter, and not one of the true geniuses of the culture.
Rubin has had more success outside of hip hop than in it

It's crazy how many people are defending this guy. We don't have a black Rick Rubin because they'd never get the benefit of the doubt without tangible skill

A lot of people like to aggrandize Rick Rubin's impact in hip-hop but downplay how big a role hip-hop producers have played in pop music :mjpls:

People rarely mention what Pharrell/Neptunes, Timbaland, Missy, Kanye, Mike Will, Mustard, etc. did for bubblegum pop music as much as they like to bring up what Rick Rubin had a hand in for hip-hop.

Sommeliers get paid a grip by wine companies and they aren’t involved in the wine making process.

:yeshrug:
True, they arent involved in the process but they are very much technical with their training.

A quality sommelier will give you history about the region of the wine...will ask you pertinent questions about what tastes you like and match that with what he believes will suit your personality. He will put you on wine you never heard before and challenge your palate based off the convo that you're having with him etc. You can low-key walk away with a mini education on wine in one evening

Rubin doesnt seem to be giving that much input from that clip. It seems like he just saying "Yes, I like" or "no, I dont like"...but bc he's a cac who was around during the Def Jam golden era nikkas is gonna :ohhh:

No but you need to know the fundamentals of both

True. Plenty of people with dope gear and credentials making wack beats no one wants to spin whilst there are also dudes with vision who can coax performances out of session musicians way better than they could alone. MJ was great at this. Its the old beat maker vs producer thing.

I wouldn’t want it
Send me Hank Shocklee or Marley Marl

Geniuses, have you peeped this?

The OGs were on a whole nother level when it came to sampling and layering using those rudimentary machines with an insane level of creativity and skill to stitch together brand new compositions from old music that sounded so fresh and authentic.
