One of my first posts on this site was about Tinashe.
There's 5x as many white people out there (domestically). So they're always going to have that structural advantage - more room for artists at every level in that lane. Musicians in that genre can also exploit fan bases that buy albums religiously - country fans don't know how to work a torrent or run searches on russian-language social media. And to add to all that, they're a more affluent population that's willing & able to shell out more for tickets & merch.
It's a miracle that we get the diversity of artists that we do. Testament to our people not giving up in the face of brutal odds.
As far as Tinashe's career goes, I really, really enjoyed her early mixtape work and was disappointed in the direction she took her career. I understand the thirst for a hit, but she had a real opportunity to nurture a seriously loyal fanbase and grow it organically. That in and of itself is gold these days. Yeah, sure, the publishing checks wouldn't ever come close to whatever she clips off "2 on" after all the splits, and she'd have to tour more than she probably wants to, but she'd still be a millionaire. Her last mixtape was really promising though - I hope she sticks with it.
Nothing's changed.

I remember my friend put me on to her way back in like 09 (maybe earlier), back when she was just making dopey youtube videos and releasing weird indie rnb stuff. She seemed pretty cool back then and I enjoyed what I listened to.
Everything since she went mainstream has felt so far from that, and she hasn't been all that interesting since. It must work for someone since she hasn't faded into complete obscurity, but it does have this very "me too" feel about it. As in, her team looks at what popular acts are doing and tries their best to emulate it without really giving her a unique identity.

This. Tinashe being being a R&B/Pop/Urban act means she has to appeal to Black Women. In this fake woke era we are in now, Tinashe being lightskin isn't going to work in her favor like it did for Beyonce & Rihanna in the 2000's.

1 of the reasons I see folks hating on her is because of the controversial statements she made in a an interview last year. Tinashe makes the type of music you'd expect from a Janelle monae but it's not dressed up in a sza -ish hipster or monae-ish "weirdo" packaging
