who made this list? Some guy named jake brown?

the rockets were rated so low because they quit on 2015-2016 season and not many people expected d'antoni to coah that offense so well. Them rockets looked not interested in basketball till they got rid of dwight howard. James Harden obviously did improve a lot but so did D'Antoni help this team a lot. They picked perfect players for his system, now its time for the playoffs to show how legit they are

Meanwhile Wesbrook's supporting cast is very poor for this era of basketball where you need shooters in order to be a dangerous team. Their 3 point shooting is nowhere near elite

This is rewriting history.

Before the season everyone laughed at the Rockets for signing Gordon and Anderson as no defense playing paraplegics.

Now everyone mysteriously knew that a team with 3 players that had been cast as "defensive liabilities" would end up with a top half defense:childplease:

i'd take adams and kanter over capella and nene easily.

give me better defenders / bigs over streaky shooters who can't do anything else when their shot isn't falling.

oladipo . gordon defensively
roberson > ariza defensively
adams > capella defensively

donovan >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> d'antoni defensively.

I am not mad or something. Why should I relax I was just discussing it. I dont understand how people had okc thunder finishing higher than rockets. Houston had a better pieces for the system to work well. I am looking at that okc team and I dont see anything special outside of westbrook. That enes kanter dude plays no defense at all, they got this robertson guy who is one of the worst free throw shooters in the league. I am guessing that when KD and westbrook played together on the team those role players looked good because all they had to do was playing their role. Now when KD is gone they have to step their game up and they are not too good for that

capela, nene, anderson, ariza, gordon, williams, beverley >> oladipo, kanter, adams, sabonis, roberson

  1. Lou Williams wasn't even on this team at the beginning of the year, Corey Brewer was...
  2. Capela had never been a starter coming into this year
  3. Adams was coming off a great playoff performance and many had him highly rated and due for a big year

Why Mike D'Antoni is a bad fit for the Houston Rockets | FOX Sports

May 26, 2016

The Houston Rockets fell from Western Conference finalists to the eighth seed in the course of one season for one big reason: poor defense.

So who has Rockets management reportedly decided to hire as head coach in an attempt to fix the problem? Mike D’Antoni, a coach who’s offense first, second, and third.

Houston is finalizing a deal with D’Antoni worth $16 million over four years, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

The Rockets can score points —€” they were eighth in the NBA last season in offensive rating —€” but they couldn’t stop anybody, and they had to fight for a playoff berth because of it.

In hiring D’Antoni, the Rockets are doubling down on their strength at the detriment of their weakness —€” a move that has rarely, if ever worked in the NBA

If these playoffs have shown anything, it’s that the cliche "defense wins championships" is true. In the last few years, we’ve been blinded by the short-term gains that come from pace-and-space, failing to notice that the final team standing every season has been a stout defensive squad.

The Rockets might make moves in the offseason to improve the team’s defense, but so far, they’ve hired the head coach with the weakest defensive résumé and are certain to lose Dwight Howard —€” the three-time Defensive Player of the Year.

These are the problems that arise when you have a general manager that views himself as an iconoclast. Daryl Morey is anchored to his "Moreyball" system, and D’Antoni ran a highly similar system for the 7-seconds-or-less Suns.

Since then, D’Antoni has posted a .420 winning percentage over six seasons in New York and Los Angeles. But Morey had no problem ignoring the abject failure, or the reasons behind it, and brought him to Houston.

Those excellent, revolutionary Suns teams didn’t even play for a title. That’s because no matter how offensively brilliant and progressive they were, they couldn’t play defense well enough to make the NBA Finals.

But in 2016, every team in the league plays a version of Moreyball. Three pointers are up drastically league-wide and the mid-range game is viewed as a last resort in most offenses.

What separates the average teams from the great ones is the ability to defend.

Will D’Antoni be able to get the Rockets to play defense? With this roster, does he stand any chance of doing so?

The Rockets’ best defensive player, point guard Patrick Beverley, is unlikely to be D’Antoni’s first-choice point guard —€” he couldn’t possibly replicate what Steve Nash was able to do for D’Antoni’s Suns teams.

And if you thought James Harden was bad on defense before, just wait until you see him under D’Antoni.

The Rockets entered the offseason as the most dysfunctional team in the NBA, and they’ve only cemented that reputation with this enabling hire.

Roberson is an extreme offensive liability.

Thunder are great defensively in the paint but they struggle greatly against good 3 point shooting teams.

You know why that is?

Because Westbrook contests the least amount of shots of any starter in the entire league:mjlol:

That's not the sole reason, but yeah that doesn't help.

He's got the record now tho, so he's not going to be doing that in the playoffs.
defnese is more consistent than shooting tho.
You not winning on a high level without great shooting tho :ld:

He got 81 games of bad defensive habits now. If you think he's gonna flip a switch and turn into Avery Bradley you gonna be in for a bad time:youngsabo:

This is almost like the time the Rockets benched that flopping, flailing fukkhead Heliflopter for the 4th quarter of an elimination game down 19, then outscored the Clipers by 31 points in one quarter. The only difference being instead of it being a meaningless regular season game against a non-playoff team, it was a playoff game against a playoff team with the entire season on the line. Maybe they should've just waived Flopter after that game. They clearly were a much better team without him. Probably would've won more than one game against the Warriors in the next round.

what do we consider a high level?

the girzzlies won 56 games and made it to the WCF without great shooting
Were they ranked bottom of the barrel in 3 point % like OKC is? :patrice:

And high level as in playoffs after the first round... especially Conference Finals and Finals.

I've been watching the games. He's been playing better defense as of late and contested more shots these last couples of weeks.
