Timbaland is my favorite producer. My research so far leads me to believe his decline can be traced to these steps
1. In 1999, with the release of Missy's Da real World album, he forced himself to change his style due to all the beat biters. He still had a gang of hits but the flexibility of the 'double time' style was gone and his style was simplified
2. He started using Open Labs Neko/Miko Vst keyboard instead of his trusty ASR-10 (and to a lesser extent, Triton). Those vst sounds are garbage and everybody has easy access to the same sounds. Again, simplifying himself.
3. He stopped using his goto Engineer Jimmy "Senator Jimmy D" Douglass sometime after FutreSex/LoveSounds. The same Engineer he's been working with since he was a ghost producer for jodeci.
4. Lastly, but most importantly, he stopped trying to innovate. I was listening to some of the stuff he was previewing from his production camp about a year ago on ig. The whole shyt was sounding like some wanna be yeezus shyt (tape distorted, pitched 808 kicks).
When you're as dope as timbaland is i don't think you can truly fall off. When you're as hot and innovative as timbaland was, and your new ideas are being stifled by a music industry that refuses to take chances, you CAN get it in your head that it's best to try to run with the pack instead of trying to lead the pack
