Ok. Rattle off 20 of the greatest hip hop albums ever. I'm curious to see what won't make it before It's Dark And Hell is Hot.
A list aint even warranted because son debuted in the game with a totally new style sonically with Swizz & Dame Grease and asethically as well , it diverted the game into a new directon from the Shiny suit era and the impact it had on streets after along with Ruff Ryders is self explanatory ... shyt is all subjective at the end of the day but you can say its top 20 and not sound crazy

it is a myth because its something that people started running with years later in the midst of a new landscape while applying the thought process of said new landscape to an era that proceeded it. the main point of the thread is that rap was different & more organic back then. people are just looking at things from a current perspective where we see rappers 10 years past their prime, still being forced onto the public as elite stars. and then people look at jay-z and wonder why X isn't doing what hes doing.

let me reiterate THIS.

people love to go on about the glory days, but people forget that one of the things that made it so great is that you had to stay on your A-game.

the typical great run was like 3 albums & 5 years tops. and then if they were lucky, they would get a run as a b-tier artist afterwards.

X didn't get 5 years as a clear-cut contender. but in those 3 years, he did more than you could as for in 5. including dropping those 3 albums, the spinoffs with ruff ryders, the tours, the legendary performances & moments, the movies, the countless collabos where he didn't just appear on tracks but he stole the show and dropped classic verses. I could go on.

this guy should be in everybody's top 15 at the very least. arguably top 10. the only thing that holds him back is that he doesn't have an album that I would consider to be an arguable top 25 release. but I do have to brush up on IDAHIH tho.

no its not.

for starters, a lot of people rocked with the 3rd album more than the 2nd. and it was definitely his most successful release commercially, and it was getting crazy play in the streets.

X started tapering off when he fell back and started doing the movies while a whole new crop of rappers were comin up. then he came back and dropped "the great depression" which was his 1st and arguably the only dud he dropped before his "retirement". that was the only album of the 1st 5 where the general consensus was lukewarm.

and now, we're at the point where yall are tryna chop DMX run up and say that it was just '98. I mean come on man. you dissin "and then there was x" as if he wasn't basically headlining probably the hottest tour of this century at the time that it was out. that ruff ryder/cash money tour. I guess we're supposed to erase all of that, and just act like he was only hot in 1998 now.

Youd be crazy to say it was just 98,his hottness obviously carry over for a few years,plus he still had singles on the followups....Fans were still caught up in the moment and they love for X made them pretend he was still droppin classics outside of 98:mjlol:....sometimes rewriting history is the right thing due to "in the moment" azz nikkas....i said and ATTWX was a let down back then and meant it...what your seeing now is 1)Im ahead of my time:sas1:....and 2)the hype is over so now nikkas have clarity and can admit they forced themselves to luv that album as diehard X stan...they dont even remember pretendimg to like it now because it was so long ago....nonetheless their memories are accurate,they didnt really like it back then,and now they are just out of stan mode enough to admit it:manny:

i know in comparison to jay or somebody, he was dropping duds

but great depression and grand champ went platinum

year of the dog again was still the #2 album in the country when it dropped

he didn't drop a straight dud until 2012, when he released undisputed on his own label

I don't know where this argument is coming from. whose claiming that ATTWX is a classic?

it was a hot/popular album, and classics were becoming scarce by that point.
