:wow:2007-2013 was a golden era looking back

Lupe Fiasco was the preeminent “conscious” rapper for millennial teenagers. He had more depth than a Kanye West. It was like one of us made it, but it still wasn’t “cool” to be woke yet. The Cool was 2007 - if you’re 30/31 right now, that was your freshman year of college. Cole, Kendrick, Wale and them were just starting to be noticed at that point. He essentially oversaw that whole lane in the mainstream as Kanye fgot arther away from College Dropout Kanye. Superstar was the number 1 song in America. When referring to the “conscious” rapper of the moment - mainstream acts would more commonly reference him. Those “college rappers” Asher Roth, and guys like Cole and them even opened for him. There’s pretty much a direct line in the eyes of a very late 80s to very early 90s kid who was in high school when Lupe got on and in college when these guys got on. Wale acknowledges it all the time and they all have at one point or another.

altho this is true, the constant comparsions are tiring and really offbase. Kendrick and Lupe are nothing alike. "Concious" is their only similarity. And really they dont even approach it the same.

Infact Kendrick isnt even really "concious" rapper like a Pac, Cube, Chuck d, or even a Lupe is where they have discussed stuff like politics, etc. Kendrick is more inward looking/self-reflective artist. At times he will address social flaws in society and rarely political one but it will just be him brushing over it.(ex Hood politics). But its just ground and sometimes necessary ground to cover for the story hes telling

funny enough a interview he did around 2013/2014 had him saying he didnt even want to be considered a "concious" artist.

define "balance" you talkin make music to appease hip hop fans and pop type of thing? Or something else

cause he did when he was getting plaques(06-10/11), he had the lyrical miracle crowd in his hand, pop, hip hop fans etc. Lupe can still make more general friendly music while still being the best lyricist.

he just chooses to go all the way into cryptic territory and makes the music he does now. I have no issues with it, cause I greatly enjoy T&Y and Drogas Wave.

But i understand that for some they dont fukk with it. Due to the fact that he seems to be doing to much. and his current Super lyrical style can be very offputing to people
I didn’t say they were alike - I was just explaining the comparison. Realistically, I think Lupe has much more to say and is clearly more well read than Kendrick.

They don’t hear you tho LOL smh lot of dikksucking in here

that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to explain in the TPAB thread. I do think his intentions are good.

1. the mike brown comment
2. The record label telling him not to speak on politics anymore
3. The last line on blacker the berry
4.I’m an Israelite, don’t call me black no more
5. And Deuteronomy say that we all been cursed.

I really don’t think people are listening because Deuteronomy and the curse of ham are talked about a lot on Damn.

growing up in the church and studying different religious groups I almost thought the same, but those talking points can be very dangerous. Slave owners used it to justify slavery. Saying we’re a cursed race justifies the systemic racism we face worldwide

I do think Kendrick has his heart in the right place and I like him he’s a good rapper but I just can’t rock with it like that

All this has me thinking is what hiphop's current landscape and climate would be like if Lupe decided to sign with another major label after Atlantic

:lupe:
