Bankrupting Putin is worth way more than a couple $Bs but keep crying tho

TLR isn't the place for the debate but yup. I guess everyone forgot the past 5 or so years of Putin spamming our social media with right-wing propaganda and manipulating the real estate market.

The spigot turned off as soon as they got bogged down in Ukraine. Im willing to let $50B go to destroy Russia without the US getting involved directly.

This is the short-sighted foreign policy which will be the downfall of the US. Putin represents an oligarchy of rich powerful Russians, and we would be foolish to think Russia would become a benevolent country by simply removing him.

We saw this folly play out in Iraq (i.e. Saddam Hussein). No reason to waste tax money money on this.

You think we aren't planning for his replacement?

The problem with Bush and Iraq was their plan was to use Iraq as a permanent middle eastern base while pretending it was a counter terrorism operation. The public didnt sign up for a 20 year occupation. No relation here.

America's leaders failed. The chess move would have been to support Russia and split Ukraine up.

At some point a hard decision will have to be made: do we continue financing Ukraine’s defense against its invader, or do we let her fend for herself even if it means an all but certain defeat to Russia.

The American people did not sign up for this.

:francis:
Leave it to nato and the E.U. the whole reason this is even happening is because the treaty organization designed to contain the USSR not only persisted but EXPANDED after the soviets already tapped out and held their L.

This can all be solved if they agree to dissolve nato and offer enhanced EU membership to Russia.

Reading thru this article and a lot of it looks familiar these days. :francis:

America and WW2: When, How And Why Did The US Enter And Why Not Sooner? | History Extra

In the 1930s many Americans did not want to become ensnared in a bloody war for the sake of distant China, or in what some Americans saw as war to perpetuate the British empire. In addition, the slow recovery from the Great Depression, with continuing high unemployment and farm problems, seemed to demand a concentration of effort on recovery at home rather than adventures abroad.

Replace China with Ukraine and Great Depression with Covid Pandemic.

Even more directly important were events in the far east, where Washington became in 1941 the main counterweight to Japan. To deter Japan from occupying more Asian territory or entering the war on Germany’s side, Washington made use of powerful economic sanctions. In July 1941 the Japanese moved military forces into southern Indochina, and in response Washington froze Japanese assets and, along with the British and Dutch, cut off oil exports to Japan. American diplomats made morally understandable but diplomatically drastic demands; in the final version, the normalisation of relations and the ending of economic sanctions depended on Tokyo ending the war in China, and pulling out of the Tripartite Pact.

Same thing as sanctions against Russia now.

5 billion dollars is a lot of money, especially with the amount of debt that the country has, but not close to what a full blown world war would cost. Who knows where Russia would stop if they were allowed to take Ukraine. They definitely got their eye on Belarus and maybe even the rest of the old Soviet Union.

This is why politics is not going to work. You always get people with agendas in office. They aren't looking out for the people. They want you to be slaves. "Give us our tax money and go to work" Is all they have to say to you.

Ukraine is a investment at this point in time for when peace comes around. Y’all just ain’t seeing the bigger picture :hubie:

geopolitics is a complicated subject. russia fukked up and gifted their adversaries a proxy war in which they'll funnel russian soldiers and equipment into a blackhole of death. this war is a bargain for every russian adversary involved especially since it doesn't risk foreign active duty military personnel. political win for numerous politicians of countries supplying military aid.

ukraine is gonna be giving out some sweatheart trade deals when this is all over.
