I just realised that there isn’t even a mortgage or rent relief for at least 3 months.

We’ve had 6.6 million file for unemployment and I’m pretty sure most of them won’t be able to afford bills for the coming months. This shyt is going to get nasty very soon if they don’t act.

The irony is if they actually want to keep this current current system going, giving people UBI for at least for the duration of this crisis will is the way to go. Ignoring them and letting them riot is the quickest way to completely destroy the system. Their choice

if UBI becomes a thing, wouldnt landlords raise rent as well? Wouldn’t the price of other shyt go up too since everyone knows that everyone receives an extra 1200 a month

No. Minimum wage and UBI doesn't work like that. That's like saying after covid landlords will raise rent 20$ because 99% of people would be able to afford it... Its true, but not all land lords would do it, so competition would rear its head and that landlord would lose tenants and income. What you are describing is only possible if absolutely everyone conspired on pricing of absolutely everything.


The worst part is that inflation however happens regardless of UBI or Minimum wage. Remember when you could buy a off brand can of soda at the store for 25 cent? Think back to the cost of candy when you were little then look at the prices now. Everything cost more, and there's been no raising of min wage or UBI in that timeframe... so why did prices go up? Because they do anyway naturally by inflation. And rent costs more than it did back then too.

You cannot stop inflation, but you can institute mechanisms to keep it from leaving people behind. While 7 an hour may have been enough for a single person to live on 20 years ago, that same person would not be able to make it on that money now with the inflation raised prices decades later. That's why UBI and a well maintained min wage are good for the economy.

By the end of this month almost half if not more than half of people will be unemployed, broke and very scared not just for their livelihood but for their very lives. Giving people some paltry $1200 for just one month which btw they won’t be seeing for weeks isn’t going to do shyt to calm them.

Introduce UBI asap or else what happens if people snap will be way worse than whatever this virus brought.

That’s a possibility. The money to support it came from private donors so I imagine they’d seek state or federal funding.

I know we want it, but judging by the responses in this thread it will never happen.

America is just going to disintegrate into a slow but steady cycle of crime, death, unemployment, homelessness, poverty, and complete societal collapse while other countries with socialist policies just watch on in horror.

Cause people are conbvinced even though it would benefit them greatly, that universal basic income is for lazy people (like welfare) and they would rather be in debt thousands for hospital bills for just spraining their ankle.

who the hell brought up the countries you stated?

I am solely referring to the program in Stockton which is unique in scope and scale to the countries you mentioned. Furthermore it’s not complete. The program was implemented AFTER Stockton went bankrupt. I get that you don’t agree with UBI in principle and that’s fine, but are you being intentionally dense or is this your baseline? Read the details before you cast aspersions.
