What caught me was they were doing some of the dances we did right before rap and hip-hop took the scene. There was this one dance they were doing that we use to call the old man, where you would lean a little forward to the right, then lean a little forward to the left, then do it twice to the left, then twice to the right. Some of the girls would lean almost as low as an upside-down L. This dance came out in late 79, and lasted thru most of the early 80's, the same time go go started in DC. A lot of my family and friends told me I was the one that brought the old man out, when I use to party on the University of Maryland campus, when I was crazy. I would have a 40 ounce in one hand (we called it a bumper back then) while leaning to the left, then leaning to the right with rhythm. The next think we knew, the whole DMV was doing it.
I also noticed they were partially doing fraternity steps. I guess the frat brothers still call it stepping or pledging. Never in my day did I'd think I would see us doing the old man, or stepping, at a Super Bowl half-time, especially the old man...that really took me back. The message I got was, we're about to get back what's ours, and it's going to be way bigger than a Superbowl. I don't know exactly when that time will be, but it's definitely getting closer, and White peoples felt it, even though there's nothing they can really really do about it.
