I think he'd be great for Fields and the Bears. The turnaround he had with the 49ers was incredible. However, he is stubborn. The 49ers offense got stale under him and he did have a rep in the Bay Area for wearing on people at Stanford and with the 49ers(though I blame that situation on the GM and owner)

I think the issue of why he gets dogged is people rip him for not winning the big games/struggling against rivals. Cant speak on Michigan. But with the 49ers we struggled with the Hawks(but who wouldn't have back then) and I think he had some bad luck in the NFC Championship/Super Bowl.

Though he swept them in 2011, split in 2012, split the regular season in 2013, and got swept in 2014. Though I guess the 2012 and 2013 games in Seattle were blowouts.

If this is true he's probably been waiting for that one big season to get his name hot again, which he just had, to bounce and get back into the NFL. Might not be a knock on Michigan at all just maybe tired of the AD, alumni, boosters, students, recruiting, eligibility, etc
