Growing up, I felt there was nothing worse than being disrespected in the Black community. Someone disrespects you in high school either you respond with a good mouthpiece or physically. Even in sports I saw guys who would lose on a play resort to fighting to get even with the other person. Yet when I went to a mostly white high school disrespect was usually played off or not taken as seriously.

Even now as a grown man I struggle to forget disrespect. Even little shyt on a day to day basis will have me thinking about it later. Consuming too much of my time and energy.

I think our community has to learn tolerate disrespect better. As the video points out that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to allow yourself to be disrespected by their are better ways to respond to it.

What do y’all think?

sure, why not?

Of course a common criticism of stoicism is that it can be manipulated to push the idea to "staying in your place" and not rocking the boat too much. That's why tech bros/entrepreneurs like stoicism so much. Someone talking salty can be brushed off most of the time, but sometimes conflict is unavoidable. Sometimes force is the only way to solve a problem.

Maybe, but I live in an Asian country and the way they handle disrespect got me thinking. Here when you see dudes get into it you’ll see them puff up, shout fukk you <——> fukk you, maybe a couple shoved and both parties will go about their business. In America if someone says fukk you, then 9 times out of 10 somebody is getting slept.

A less extreme example I have is my boy I worked with. Tall, handsome gang, smart, quick learner. Dude could’ve been regional manager, but he just couldn’t take orders from cacs. “Hey George, can you run these reports for me and have them to me this afternoon”

“Man, that’s extra work you gotta pay me, I’m not doing extra work etc etc”

I was steady telling breh just do it they want to promote you. But he couldn’t get the “unfairness” out of his head.

Maybe that’s what Stoics refer to when they say do what you’re supposed to do, because it will yield greater results. Now I have toussaint in my avatar so you know I’m for killing slave masters, but there is some nuance to rocking the boat.

It depends on the severity of the disrespect there’s limits but a minor infringement can be ignored

Bravado and Ego can land a man in jail
And it’s especially not worth it if it’s over something superficial like jumping the queue

If someone is getting in your face cursing following you, by all means smack the shyt out of them because they’re a legit threat at that point.
