How did VA became “northernized” after the fall of the Confederacy?

This reminds me of the situation with the state of Maryland, which, by and large, is the South; however, the city of Baltimore, culturally, is more East Coast.

The Wire, for example, Baltimore is in the South, but the city itself feels more like an East Coast city, the way people dress and act is more in tune with those up North.

The State of Virginia is without a doubt in the South, but maybe if he specifically pointed out a city, it would've made more sense, but then again, I don't know much about Virginia. I have a cousin (he's way older than me, in his late 40s, married with kids and shyt) from Lynchburg, VA although he was born in NYC and lived there until he was probably a teen and left with his mother when his father and her separated.
Lynchburg Roanoke Charlottesville nice little cities with a southern charm but the surrounding counties are filled with a bunch of rednecks. Central and South West Va are undoubtedly Southern when you drive out of the cities.

Can somebody please explain to me why you’d say Virginia ain’t the South? Does it look different than you think the South looks or something lol. Like I see people in here saying culturally… I mean I spend a lot of time in the Outer Banks and I could lie to myself and say they’re not the South, they’re just east coast( even though the banks are literally on the coast lol) People are bringing up actual confederacy history but folk don’t care.
People seem to think that the north eastern coast is a representation of the whole state

My cousins used to get called the N-word when they came to Manassas to play baseball in the 80s. To me once your past Manassas or Woodbridge you're in the South.

I get the historical context of slavery but what do people who are from there say today? Is the only thing that makes the south the south the stance on slavery?

Like can I be in Washington DC or Jersey, take one step now the culture is southern? :jbhmm:

It's literally just like Native Americans being called Indians, just cause some cracker thought he came to India 400 years ago.
Technically speaking, parts of southern New Jersey are actually under the Mason Dixon line.

I would say it’s cultural things like accents, how often I see a rebel flag, is football more important than academics, does the state make moonshine, you know important southern staples, how many different brands of chewing tobacco are at the gas station, etc. Virginia checks all of those boxes.

Pennsatucky outside of the major cities gives rural vibes but you can tell it’s not Dixie.

:mjlol:

DC nikkas pronounce the word area like 'urrea' and carry like 'curry' :dahell:

Drive a couple miles out in VA or MD and you still see confederate flags :beli:

DC is definitely the south
It’s like St. Louis proximity wise (fits in two regional areas), but it’s also just like Chicago and Detroit, whereas it has a lot of people from the south that gives it a southern feel.

The only reason I get an up north/east coast vibe from dc are the brownstones and the toll roads.

"This Virginia
Straight from the country, right there with my kinfolk
Golds in my mouth and they put 26's on Benzos
Dirt roads, Backwoods, they got weed but I've been dope
Ratchet, nikka, we act hood
But I'm gettin' money with these white folk"
