Jay-Z is an underground rapper that went mainstream over time (which is the best way to do it). So basically he had both the streets and the mainstream in the palm of his hand at one point. It's an incredible juggling act of credibility meets mainstream appeal.

To be fair, Jay-Z is a fantastic rapper but he's no Nas. Someone like Nas was never going to be mainstream like that. His music goes too deep for that.

Jay-Z had the perfect formula for a bit of depth, a bit of raw and a bit of commercial appeal.

Every single *credible* artist that got play on MTV (Nas, Wu, Mobb included) is bigger now than they were back then. Even semi-active rappers like Missy and DMX. Think about how much X railroaded his career and people STILL know who he is. Average people.
