I dont know how old YOU THINK I AM but i'm in my late 30's and dont need a history lesson about 1997. I was a grown man back then.
What makes CNN an underground album? cause it didnt sale?
Not saying it was a pop album. But it's hard for me to accept that excuse if it was on the majors and had videos on BET
Wu had buzz, method was a star. OB4cl flopped.
We gotta keep things in perspective and treat albums equal.
If something wasnt popping in my region AND it didnt sell,it makes sense that i believe it wasnt popping or just a regional classic.
That's how the east treats all albums that werent big on the east. so lets go with that theme
You seem to have a beef with east coast music.
You also seem to treat sales as the only thing that can seem classics
Both are dumb notions. And I believe me and you had this argument before on the same shyt
I don't care about sales. When most people speak of classic music, they don't care about sales either. They care about THE MUSIC.
There is nobody in their right mind that would say OBFCL is a flop. Nobody. They didn't expect it to do 4 million. It was put out on loud, which is not one of the 4 majors. It was Raekwon. Not a pretty boy with dance tracks and classic samples of already hits. It was for the streets. And to this day, you won't find a rapper alive to say it wasn't a classic or great music. Therefore it is a classic. Classic what? Classic music
CNN was no different. It was released on penalty. Not a major. It had ZERO radio singles. No dance shyt. No hit record samples. No song for the club. Or for the bytches. No famous r&b artist on the hook. No famous rappers on the features. Just banger after banger of great music.
Still it went #4 on the r&b charts and #3 on the rap charts and #21 in the entire country. From 2 completely unknown artists, one who was in jail.
They were not expecting to sell 1 million or 500k. They exceeded expectations as nore and others have said. That's why he got a solo deal. That's why Rae got 3-4 albums to drop after the first. Cause everyone isn't expected to do snoop numbers and puffy numbers. Everyone isn't given that budget, so they don't have to worry about selling that much to earn it back. Everyone isn't even pressing up 1 million copies to even go plat.
A flop is perspective. If jay comes out and does 1 million, it'd be a flop. Cause he's expected to go multi every time at this point. If joe budden does 150k first week it's fukking amazing cause his last 8 shyts did like 50.
So forget that we all been saying it was an east coast classic for 2 days. I don't know why you keep arguing what we agree on. But no. All albums are NOT treated the same. They don't all get the same budget, rollout, the star is different, publicity campaign is different. No they don't get measured the same
A nikka with a 100k album budget on his first album should not be getting judged on the same scale as Kanye west on his 8th
CNN on a debut on penalty records with no radio singles should not be compared with snoop Dogg on death row with dr dre and hit samples. Raekwon with ice cream on loud should not be compared to method man with his own single on 36 chambers and another single with Mary j blidge on def jam.
