Was Compton underappreciated due to the times?

The album was VERY dope... but in comparison to Dre's previous albums, it wasn't to that level of excellence which is fine. I feel a lot of it has to due to Dr. Dre himself as a rapper. Maybe had DOC been involved, it'll make a huge difference. Production was top notch, but it wasn't groundbreaking because it was basically what the L.A. sound of today evolved into already. You listen to albums from L.A., especially from the TDE camp... this been the vibe.
It wasnt dope,it was forgettable. It was dopely mixed but everything else was weak

If kendrick had a drake level talent,he could of helped dre
make this a quality album.
But he's wack so he couldnt do for dre what snoop or eminem did for dre.
Dre should of made detox before 50 and game start beefing,he fukked up

The album was great IMO..Compton was more of a musical memoir for Dr. Dre's career than the usual blunts, 40s and bytches theme that was showcased on The Chronic and 2001. A more mature album for those that followed Dre throughout his 30 year producing career.

I guess no one noticed that throughout the whole album the focal point of that album was the cohesiveness of rhyme flow and soundscapes. Nothing rehashed or generic..everything song had it's own feel.
Interesting perspective, I agree. :ehh:
shyt wasnt interesting. nikkas be trying to get deep but really aint saying anything.
That shyt was weak period.
Where's the dope records at?
You can go to any of the dre's real classics and they're backed by records that people loved.
No one cares about them forgettable songs on COMPTON.
The bolded is absolute nonsense. The album sounds generic as fukk.
It doenst have the memorable verses, hooks or grooves to match any of dre's real great albums.

It's a dope album but I just think in this time frame music is consumed so differently. I think the combination of it not being GREAT (ie like Dre's old shyt) the era and the hype of whatever project Dre was going to release next made for a negative tint on the perception of the album.

I think that can be a good thing though, kinda like getting that quick nut out the way so you can really beat shyt up.

:ehh:

Dre no longer has to worry about super sky high expectations when he drops his next project. He's still legendary and an icon but I think this album getting some luke warm perception makes his next release easier.

What he really needs is to break a NEW artist. His greatest moments have come along with ushering in some of the most unique talents in Hip Hop history. Kendrick probably been that for Detox but that moment never came. He was already established and looking how shyt played out with Rakim and The Firm it seem like working with artists who are pretty much finished products make for better conversation than it does music.

For Dre to truly have the effect on the genre that WE (old nikkas) are used to seeing him have he's gonna have to once again use an album as a launch pad for somebody FRESH. And unlike rappers who need to be center stage he can still do that when he's in his 60's, we're going to get another burner from Dre eventually. But it won't be with him rapping on every song like Compton with features from finished products.

Maaaaaan, this wasn't even an LA sounding album.... and TDE isn't even a good measure of LA rap sounds like.

It doesn't even have a cohesive sound/feel to it.

You could ride down Rosecrans right now, and not a single song would be a soundtrack to Compton.....Should've called it Paramount, cause that shyt definitely wasn't a soundtrack to Compton

The only point I take away from that album is Dr Dre not sounding like himself. Besides that I love that album! Everybody got down and spit some dope shyt and the beats are all on point.

I've seen this thread 3-4 times since the album dropped so it's fair to say more people appreciate this album with time. Tracks like "Deep Water", "All In A Days Work", "For Tha Love Of Money", "Talking To My Diary" and "Loose Cannons" are all 5 star songs.

I'm hyped for both Jon Connors and Paaks Aftermath debuts, hopefully they get the chance to drop.

Few good songs, overall it sounded like dre wanted to make movie scores instead of rap music, heavy overproduced:manny:
