When I was growing up in the Bronx, late 70's - early 90's there were gypsy cabs. Some random guy driving up and down the bus route and give you a ride to anywhere on it for the price of a bus ride. You could even give them an MTA token. The city cracked down on them hard at some point but then I moved to Bk in the early 00's and the Caribbeans took it to the next level with conversion vans on Flatbush. They would park down the block from the mall and sometimes the cops would fukk with them but for the most part they did their thing.
