You got old.

No one was making music like Marvin Gaye and Al Green in the 90s so I’m not sure why you’d expect music like that in the OP to be dominating charts today.

But there are some folks making music like the OP, more than we’re making 70s type music in the 90s so I don’t get why people always bytch about this.

Music shapes the narrative in reality not the other way around.
You don't hear real rnb songs being broken on the radio anymore like back in the 90s because Clear Channel AND Radio One aren't playing that shyt at all.
music shapes the narrative in reality not the other way around¿

you sure¿

radio is in the backseat now bro

the masses show what they are into with their voluntary attention

In this week's Billboard Hot100, 43 songs are by black people.

The Hot 100 Chart | Billboard

That's 43% of all songs.

Black people are 12.7% of the population in the USA.

Therefore black artists are disproportionatly over represented in the music industry in the USA.
But notice

the top two artists are black Weeknd and Roddy Rich, #5 is Future and Drake, #7 is Doja Cat but everything else are white versions of black music. Including that Billy Joel inspired song at #10 Someone you loved.

R&B?

My current favorite is Snoh Aalegra. Her album is dope. And should appease the stuck in the 90s crowd.

I was surprised by how much I liked Jhene’s latest. Not generally a fan, but that album had more good songs than not. I wouldn’t say it’s comparable to the OP, tho

Mainly same artists. Either tracks on their solo albums or they are features (Weeknd, DaBaby, Lil Baby, Drake, Roddy Rich, Meg the Stallion, Lil Uzi.

Everything about R&B changed post Napster era and this:
Telecommunications Act of 1996 - Wikipedia

But we abandoned R&B. around the late 90's you could see a shift toward hip hop, we even got tired of hearing inspirational gospel music

these songs use to be on the radio all the time just like the "regular" songs:
