I blame the Beyonce popularity contest era.
It really killed things for a lot of people

Thread gets made all the time but I'm here for it. I'm not happy with either r&b or rap right now. I've said this before they basically merged into one genre imo and that's when this shyt became awful.
To get all @Art Barr with it....when they started putting R&B and Rap/Hip-hop on the same radio stations in the 90s that was kind of the beginning of the end.

But in 2020. Deadass. There are so many rappers who are basically singers. Basically rapping and singing at the same time. Or rapping with melodic cadence and double time verses. the two have become almost indistinguishable on the radio.

Exactly.

You should be able to put it on at a bbq without offending the older people, women & children.

Lil' girls should NOT be hearing lyrics like "eat the booty like groceries" because they will repeat those same lyrics

Cursing should be forbidden in R and B songs. Why should young kids, parents, and grandparents be exposed to vulgar sex acts on audio form? :gag:

Cats don't like to hear eating azz on a cookout. Or some trap beats you hear in a strip club. Some things should alwayd remains separate.

....
ok

This was a bit of an assortment based on what nikkas say doesn't exist anymore. I left out my more alternative sounds from this list, to make it more palatable for The Coli. I could have gone left with this shyt, but these are mostly recognizable sounds that won't threaten the listener.

NWA were ahead of their time with "I'd Rather....." because that would be a critically acclaimed "R&B" song today

i had a convo with friends bout this the other day. The early 2000 formula was R&B song feat hottest rapper like fab jada jay-z nelly. Then labels wanted to promote their own artist but only as hook singers ashanti olivia etc and if they got hot enough they might get an album.

Plus the R&B dudes wanted to be thugs and spit they own 15 bars instead of paying someone. Its low key underground now but who got time to dig thru all the wack artists to find the good stuff

Yep I agree but back then the rappers aren't trying to be singers and the singer's weren't rapping so I liked that style just fine.

Fax, R&B is far from dead, I don't know what folks be talking about. Also there's different styles of R&B that people like. That one stereotypical sound doesn't represent all of R&B.

Big Facts!!!

The crazy part is that a lot of modern Alt-RnB is actually way more musically advanced than so-called traditional 90s R&B. I'm speaking in terms of music theory, chord progressions, instrumentation, etc... but that's a convo for another thread.
