i had a convo with friends bout this the other day. The early 2000 formula was R&B song feat hottest rapper like fab jada jay-z nelly. Then labels wanted to promote their own artist but only as hook singers ashanti olivia etc and if they got hot enough they might get an album.

Plus the R&B dudes wanted to be thugs and spit they own 15 bars instead of paying someone. Its low key underground now but who got time to dig thru all the wack artists to find the good stuff

:yeshrug:
I think that formula really goes back to the 90s. Another interesting thing is you had people like Queen Latifah , Lauryn Hill, Bobby Brown etc sining and rapping on the same track many years ago but it wasn't a clear distinction when they rapped then sung and now it's not and that is my beef. Biggie is another that did this from time to time.

Big Facts!!!

The crazy part is that a lot of modern Alt-RnB is actually way more musically advanced than so-called traditional 90s R&B. I'm speaking in terms of music theory, chord progressions, instrumentation, etc... but that's a convo for another thread.
Spin it off

Ya'll swore Sam Smith and Adele took this shyt about a decade ago. :heh:

Go head on with these tired arguments :camby:

Remember when Macklemore and Iggy Azalea were gonna take over Hip Hop in 2014? :laff:

Adele, Sam Smith, Justin Timberlake, Ariana Grande (her R&B songs), none of them will ever take over R&B, it's still a black genre, sure they have success but white artists will never be the face or the standard of R&B ever.

NWA were ahead of their time with "I'd Rather....." because that would be a critically acclaimed "R&B" song today

NWA made excessive cursing cool and had kids hiding their tapes from their parents. Cause cursing in any form by kids is forbidden by parents, even in a song. Explicit music also drives families away from listening to songs with each other.

Like back in the day, you can enjoy listening to Marvin Gaye, Earth Wind and Fire, and even Cameo with your family in your house. No worry about cursing, ratchet shyt, none of that. It made families bond together and made them stronger.

Now, these ratchet autotune songs is restricted to your homies. Not even your kids or parents can hear it.

You are c00ning rather you know it or not. We didnt stop buying the records so why would are artist give up our sound?
You should look up what a c00n is.

Some R&B artists decided to be "rap-singers" because R&B didn't sell anymore and only rap did. They went where the sales are.

Like others will tell you it's good R&B out there if you search . The issue I feel is on the mainstream level & the "others" who have been let in.

Oh & Altho some are good why every female sound like Summer Walker :dwillhuh:

I done came across about 4 different new singers who all sound the same from voice to production to song writing
@dora_da_destroyer @ThiefyPoo y'all noticed this?

Hold up....I know this is a gospel song, but when this song dropped a few years ago it took off like a rocket:

listen to her singing from her GUT, the unpolished rawness in her vocals, listen how the production doesn't OVERPOWER her singing it compliments it

you young ninjas born in the 90's will suck your teeth and do a body roll or whatever - but this is your culture right here, quit letting white people dictate our shyt! :pacspit:

I remember her from The Voice. There was a thread on her I posted in a few years back. This is the kind of singing most whites don't like because they can't copy it

And she was like 15 in this

808 drum machine made Jazz, old school R&B, and old school Rock and Roll commercially obscelete

Now Auto-tune made Vocal music as a whole commercially obscelete

This at the bolded. I'm a big fan of Babyface's production work but some of the shyt he did for other artists didn't age too well.

Listened to a El Debarge album he produced the other day and it was mostly :picard: with those beat kits .

that's wild :ohhh:

Overall, not really. But I’m old too lol. So that goes back to my original point. Most Marvin Gaye fans (who were fans when his music was released, not younger cats who picked it up later) weren’t feeling 90s artist as much either. It was too vulgar for them. It was just “copying” older music too much in their eyes. They couldn’t sing as well. Etc.

The 20 somethings must like this current music, cuz they’re consuming it. :ld:
