Because it's leverage, same reason he went to Dallas. Cuban specifically said before Melo came that he wasn't offering any max contracts.... yet Melo went anyway.

My thought exactly.. Just go after Stephenson or Bledsoe and Ariza. Resign guys like Swaggy P/Hill get a defensive minded center like Okafor and we'll make the playoffs.

Melo wants to win RIGHT NOW. Not the following season or the season after that. Convincing him that he can be on a contender right away, will get him out of NY. If he's not convinced, than his ass is staying in NY.

33/34 y/o Gasol who's on the decline and a 35-year-old, soon to be 36 Kobe who's on his last legs..... probably wouldn't even make the playoffs. And Melo's suppose to leave NY for that? No chance.
