Why do you think Stephenson is JR Smith lite?
High risk high reward type player. Turnover prone, goes rogue and gets wild with the ball. Forces up bad shots.. Knuckle head with crazy talent and potential that you hope matures and settles down (they almost never do).
Basically Lance is not the type of player you ( or I rather) want on a team with little to no structure.

That Ed Davis signing is easily the best bargain deal in all of free agency, makes up for that terrible Jordan Hill deal, but at least Lakers have a team option for the 2nd year, so practically whoever plays better between Davis & Hill this season stays. 
I think he can play the 5, has the mobility and seems promising as a PNR defender. If Lakers can somehow sign a 3 & D player like Marion, than their could be some resemblance of hope.
