my original guess going in was that this movie was going to be some type of allegory about gun violence. Like how people are in an uproar about kids missing but had this been a school shooting, no one would really care.

That was my thought as well

17 kids get killed in a classroom and a host of people look for excuses and things to blame other than gun violence, everyone moves on. 17 kids are missing from a single classroom and the entire town shuts down.

This movie tries to subvert the expectations by being wayyyyyyyy different than trailer. I actually like that, but I got pulled out of the movie a lot with the comedic aspects of the film. Like, my man had the meth-head get tossed four times on some Naked Gun shyt.

That was hilarious but in context it just showed that those possessed people will keep coming at you until you kill them. Didn't bother me.

Generally, I think this movie is about how performing and conforming to social niceties can land us in even more dire situations than if we had just challenged the circumstance directly.

I don't think it's about anything or trying to make a statement. It's just a movie about a witch. I like that there wasn't any pretentious messaging.

No, your old ass can’t live with us. No, you can’t come in. No, you can’t have a bowl of water. No, you can’t speak on behalf of the parents. And so on and so on.

Dope premise but I prefer a more serious tone.

It was serious to me. Even when reviews were saying the ending was comedic I didn't take it that way. Visually it was funny but again that's exactly what should happen in context. They said the possessed are like heat seeking missiles so when the kid cast the spell those kids were going straight for Ms. Gladys:birdman:

It was the same thing Wong was doing running through the streets crazy. Only thing that made it more humorous than horror was it was kids chasing an old lady and the reaction from the neighbors. Wasn't anything funny about what they did when they caught up to her:huhldup:

I agree wholeheartedly. I think this movie is like a 7.5/8. I like horror movies that don’t double as comedies.

Unlike seemingly a lot of people on this forum, I actually like Barbarian. It’s such an inversion of horror tropes (i.e., in the wrong place at the wrong time). Barbarian asks, “Well, what if you’re in the right place and any time would’ve been the wrong time?”

Gladys was one evil bytch. Villain of the year?

But there's no way that old ass bytch..

Would've made it as far as she did before those kids caught her.

I bought it. They were giving her life. If you notice, when she first moved in she was bald. After she possessed the parents she had those struggle braids. Last time we saw her, her hair was long and flowing where it was growing.
