One plot hole in the movie: There's the scene where Alex comes home from school and Paul (cop) and James (druggie) are both standing in the living room.
That doesn't make any sense because we saw before that Paul entered the house in the morning or early afternoon, and then it was nighttime when he dragged James from the car into the house. So there wouldn't be any way for Alex to walk in and see the two of them standing there.

In that scene, that was clearly Alex's first time seeing them. Alex noticed the police car outside and then walked inside, saw Paul, and said "Hello?". Then, he saw James and was freaked out a bit.

The gun over the house with 2:17 in Josh Brolin’s dream made it seem like they were going with the school shooting angle with Alex being the shooter, and some kind of supernatural element making him come up with the idea at 2:17am.
