Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
I'm thinking about how wealth is built from generation to generation and I'm curious about others' experiences.

When I say successful, I mean able to give you a financial head start.

My parents came here from another country with no real advantages. Didn't speak English , weren't White, didn't come with a bunch of money...

They did what they could but I definitely wouldn't say they gave me a financial head start.

They don't own a property and don't have cash to leave behind either, so for my niece and nephew me and my sister are the first successful generation in the US.

Whatcha life like?

If you were fortunate enough to get a head start, what was it and what did you do with it?

they both teach

they helped me out w college, i graduated with about 20k in loans. never had a car or got any money growin up, they told me to go make it myself. gotta say, looking around at some people i know, that it made me better off :ehh:

That's actually invaluable help that they gave you...they pretty much understood the educational and financial system in America and guided you.

My mom is a CPS worker has been for 30 years. Always was good with money. Had me and my sister a good college fund.

My dad owns his own building company. He was fairly small time. But made about 60-80k a year. Always bought my sister and I used cars from our teens til we could buy our own.

My dad has A LOT of assets. Owns 4 houses, couple rentals and like 8 used cars.

My mom saved most of her money. Has close to 200k in her 401k. Probably 50k in the bank or more not sure.

My mom overall did very well for herself, pulling in a lil bit above 90k a year as a RN. A major reason why as a single parent we still never really had serious financial crisis. Maybe a couple days of the cable being shut off every once in a while, but not like a week of no power or something major.

That's why I'm gonna have to get my shyt together cause I'm not trying to see a big drop in living comfortability as an adult compared to when I was growing up.

Nope. Ma Dukes was a teacher for years, got tired of it but couldn't find better work so she's still teaching. Pops had a degree and was a writer and still writes but he was more concerned with fighting the man and activism than making money. Dude literally took a job tossing bags at the airport so he could do union work. So since I've been grown neither has ever been in a position to help me out financially and I got through college on grants and loans.

My parents were always lower-middle class but they taught me how to save money. I never got no hand outs and my moms kicked me out the crib when I dropped outta high school. Im kinda glad she did that because it forced me to watch every penny and stack.

Mom got a job right out Highschool (Broadcasting), stuck with the shyts and became second in command next to the Boss through time and experience. :blessed: She's the reason our immediate family has had it as good as we do and one of the main reasons I learned how to save/budget, but not for traditional reasons. Back in the days all a young breh wanted to do was play videogames and In the Caribbean it ain't like as if we had that many options in the 90's in terms of gamestores'n'shyt so you'd get ONE shot at one of them over priced ass stores and had to choose between weak ass titles like Chameleon Twist or Castlevania 64, no redos, no savesies for a next time, so when she started pulling the school card = Videogames shyt on me, I started saving lunch money, graduated to hustling blue tapes (Softcore porn, then porn rips once Torrents came out) and minor gambling 'cause she wouldn't buy me shyt save for Christmas and summer Holidays. I thank her for that shyt 'cause she made me realize that she's provided me with everything I needed (Breh never went without) and anything I wanted, she motivated me to save up for the shyt myself with my own scratch since I'd never have to worry about supporting anyone but myself.

Other than that, she pretty much keeps the household running money wise and since I'm back home now I give her 1K every other month even though she can do the shyt on her own.

I hope she knows this shyt since a breh pretty much used up the money he had saved/gambled/budgeted from his car fund to bless her with that new jeep she skating about in now while a breh got to start from square one again.:mjpls: But fukk it, that's my Moms.:hug:She been the real MVP all my life.:mjcry:

Nice story, breh. Wish I could rep
My parents are successful and have land and material wealth to pass down.
Cool. How have you taken advantage of your parents having you and your family in a good position?

Or is it a thing where you have to wait till they die (knock on wood)
