Dad retired in his 50s, was a millionaire in his 40s.... mom(rip) was a millionaire in her on right, my pops originally set her up with the seed money to start her own business....

My Grandfather on my dads side was an engineer , on my mothers side a Bishop....
They had land and properties passed to them and my parents have the same plus their businesses to pass onto me and my siblings ...

my Mom passed away last year but we havent started to sort out her assets yet....... no one really wants to do it...

What'd you do after dropping out and being kicked out

I was living with two different broads, had all my shyt stashed between both their spots. I ended up getting my GED and a job doing stock for an appliance company, saved up, bought a used whip, tried going to community college for a while but it was proving to be useless. Just continued to work crazy hours and save as much as I could. I actually moved back in with my moms a little while after that cause she saw I was trying to do the right thing...that eased some stress. Eventually I got a sales job where I was making some real paper. Met my current girl, moved in together, and now I got a good amount saved with zero debts and excellent credit. Things could have worked out way worse.

My father went from being homeless when he was 17 to being lead mechanic at our country's (Haiti) biggest distributor in commercial trucks by 20 and opening his own business and hiring his former boss by 23 to being a major government (military) contractor by his 30s.
And when i say homeless this is Haiti where there are no such things as homeless shelters or homeless people living in cars :francis:. Just straight sleeping in the street, homeless.

Now you understand why trying to measure up to him is so depressing for me.

My mom on the other hand came from affluent family but failed at multiple business ventures.

I'm thinking about how wealth is built from generation to generation and I'm curious about others' experiences.

When I say successful, I mean able to give you a financial head start.

My parents came here from another country with no real advantages. Didn't speak English , weren't White, didn't come with a bunch of money...

They did what they could but I definitely wouldn't say they gave me a financial head start.

They don't own a property and don't have cash to leave behind either, so for my niece and nephew me and my sister are the first successful generation in the US.

Whatcha life like?

If you were fortunate enough to get a head start, what was it and what did you do with it?

To this day I still tell my parents thank you for the knowledge they shared with me.

It was like they put it out and if I matured enough to grab it and use it that is what it is.

They are successful. Collecting 6 figures when I was collecting 4.

Somewhere tropic...
My parents are hard working middle class folk. Dad was a contractor, Mom was a teacher/principal. They stacked their gwop and acquired houses, land and are financially set. I can't say I got a head start in life cause I've always worked for my own shyt. Even in high school cause they wasn't buying me shyt :heh: Only student loan I have was to get my MBA and that aint shyt really. :manny: When they die, they certainly do have assets to pass on.

My mother moved here but my dad didnt. He hated American lifestyle.

We have property in Haiti. 1 house we lived in + 1 more and some more land we never built out. We sold my father's business since it was pretty much down by the time he passed. I also inherited some other lands from my grandfather and great grandma in Haiti but i just have to claim it. My cousin has been pushing for me and my sis to get on it.

But it hasnt really helped much here. My dad was murdered in Haiti in 99. My mom moved here in 88 and worked housekeeping at a hotel for some years until she went to work as a nursing assistant. Didnt have much money. I moved here in 93 and had to work and pay our way through college. I never received a red penny grant from financial-aid, period. I did it all on my own after moving here and overcoming the challenges of learning a new language WHILE learning math, science and other topics in said new language. Graduated H.S., went into the army for a short time, then got my engineering degree. Got a decent job. I could be doing much better but im surviving at least

So when i hear mofos here talking sh!t about how hard things are blah blah blah. While I do understand the struggles of being black in the country since i too am black but at the same time you have to understand if deep inside i look at some of them like :francis:

Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
Just going off the responses it doesn't seem like the benefit of having successful parents it's direct...

Maybe it's more indirect in the sense that having their assets, affluence , or assurances allow you to take more risks?

One thing's for sure, the more they know and pass on, the better prepared you'll be even if they had nothing else to give
