I'm thinking about how wealth is built from generation to generation and I'm curious about others' experiences.
When I say successful, I mean able to give you a financial head start.
My parents came here from another country with no real advantages. Didn't speak English , weren't White, didn't come with a bunch of money...
They did what they could but I definitely wouldn't say they gave me a financial head start.
They don't own a property and don't have cash to leave behind either, so for my niece and nephew me and my sister are the first successful generation in the US.
Whatcha life like?
If you were fortunate enough to get a head start, what was it and what did you do with it?
Yup!
Mom came to NY from down south in the 60's to go to nursing school. Had me and we moved into the PJs from my aunts house. Mom busted her tail and went to school at night to get her degrees and moved us up outta the Pjs and into a house. Moms was the head nurse of a medical Clinic at Jacobi hospital before retirement. Now, she's enjoying life and relaxing living with my sister further north.
Pops grew up in the south bronx off westchester ave and got his degree, then second degree in radiology. Worked at Jacobi hospital until he struck out on his own and started his own portable xray business. Pops now has 3 businesses and is tha X-Ray imaging gawd for the tri-state area AND is in politics too.
Ma dukes cleared 90K a year before retirement, Pops still clears 250k+ a year depending on how well his side businesses do.
They put me thru military school and college with no debt and a good credit score.
Definitely gave me a good start and part of the reason my pockets deep now and my credit score 800+.
Edit: Forgot about houses and land down south, Arizona, Brazil and Mexico to come to us kids after they pass too.
They, literally, set us kids up for the future.
