The main problem for a lot of people is that the companies incorporating loot boxes, are in no way, shape or form, mom and pop. These are huge studios who are making money hand over fist. Some of the first games to include lootboxes (TF2 for one) needed the money as damn near everything they released was free. So we have mostly valve and Mass Effect 3 to blame for loot boxes, to be fair, in both cases, the ideology failed.
OW is doing much better currently with the whole "lower chance of duplicates" drop rates, but still, compulsion loops are so shady it makes you rethink a lot of developer notes and trailers. GTA5 and Witcher 3 didn't need loot boxes to sell a billion units...

GTA 5 makes most its money from micro transactions , what are you going on about
Micro transactions came way later...after they made a billy.
now people are saying that's not really trueShadow of war is hiding it's true ending behind either grinding endlessly or buying loot boxes. Either grind for 40 hours extra or pay money to get the ending
Why would it destroy that feeling? If anything it makes your time and effort seem more valuable considering people are willing to pay money for it.Micro transactions destroy a basic fundamental principal of gaming, which is reward and progression.
You work hard to unlock certain items and you feel a sense of accomplishment. If you can spend money on unlocking things you would normally earn, it destroys the work and reward aspect of the game.
This is the only problem IMO. As long as the progression seems fair, it's all good. Some games do it right and some games do not.Sure the transactions may not be mandatory but be realistic often times than not you earn in game currency at a sluggish rate compared to those that use their parent's credit card to pay for micro-transactions.
The sky is falling!!!!!!This shyt is literally destroying what gaming is at its purest state. Stop defending this bullshyt and understand that it is nothing more than a greedy corporate cash grab and is destroying the fukking art.

To those calling this gambling and taking advantage of people, how does this differ from trading cards, or Pokémon cards, blind bags, even something like Cracker Jacks.
Why are loot boxes so morally wrong but these other things all acceptable and a huge part of kids lives?
There are similar odds on lootboxes. At least the ones I've seen. You can consider those gambling, sure. I'm 100% sure every booster pack of Pokemon cards and every pack of trading cards (basketball, baseball, football, I bought them all) I bought as a kid gave odds though. They're on the back of the pack. You were guaranteed at least 1 rare in every booster pack of Pokemon cards for instance. And blind bags are like 1:however many are shown on the back, no? Like I don't think there's any rares or anything. So the odds are there for you to see.
Why are there no odds on these lootboxes? Cause that seems awful suspicious to me

That's usually how the gamer outrage cycle goes.
