China Has Forced Blizzard To Reveal Exact 'Overwatch' And 'Hearthstone' Drop Rates
All this complaining but look...China has the law that forces them to show the rates. There they are.
Its definitely not fair to blame Blizzard for other companies being horrid with their practices. Overwatch since release has given maps, game modes, costumes...all updates for free since release. Its all funded by the people who spend the bread on the box. Id rather have this system than having to buy a map pack for example. I havent spent a dime on Overwatch and have never felt the need to, nor do I feel I have inadequate amounts of rare costumes compared to other players..
What the loot box system also does is make the rare stuff actually rare. This is fine for online multiplayer games. You dont want everyone having all the coolest costumes. Plus within those many boxes you get those drops for coins that will allow you to save up and truly buy those few costumes you really really want. And for everyone that costume will differ so those coins also add to how OW's system works really well.
Next the assumption that gambling addicts are the ones that buy the boxes. Evidence of that? When I played Overwatch I didnt level up and open my lootboxes because I had a gambling addiction. I did it cause its part of the gameplay and its weaved in well. There is also the gamer that will say "This game has provided me x amount of hours of fun, I want to support the devs who gives us free updates by buying a box."
Thinking about it....Imagine if Street Fighter V instead of DLC had lootboxes? So instead of buying the 20 different Chun li costumes, you could possibly get some through loot boxes? What if all the new stages and characters were free updates because there is a lootbox system?
You win X amount off matches, level up, whatever... you get a box. That is more incentive to play the online modes. Similarly with Overwatch...Lot of the reason to just log in and level up is because the level up is rewarded with a box. Right now in fighters the only incentive to play online ranked is to get good or for worthless 'points'. Capcom has a 'fight money' option, but the fight money equivalents to real money for stages, characters etc are absurd and its impossible to get all the characters without paying, even for hardcore gamers. That fight money exchange rate exists because 1.Its not purely for cosmetics, and 2. you have a direct choice of what you can get. That system literally means you gotta use extra money or you wont have essential game content. Lootbox system would work way better, and who knows, maybe Capcom would make more money and have a livelier playerbase. I know I didnt buy season 1 or season 2 DLC and there are many others like me. Just like I wouldnt have bought the "Orisa" pack in Overwatch. Its good for free though
I say let the people who wanna pay for lootboxes pay for them while I get the free content
And finally I dont like the idea of saying "children play these games!" either. Your kid shouldnt have easy access to your credit card, you can PW protect your credit card on consoles.....and you shouldnt have your credit card info saved onto these consoles anyway due to hackers.
